Gas Well Explosion Sparks Fireball and Evacuations in Aceh Village

A dramatic underground gas eruption triggered a towering fireball in the village of Gampong Blang Rubek in North Aceh, Indonesia, after workers drilling a community water well accidentally struck a pressurized gas pocket deep below the surface.

The explosion occurred in the early hours of May 22, 2026, sending flames, mud, rocks, and debris shooting an estimated 250 feet into the air. Witnesses described hearing a deafening blast moments before the night sky lit up with orange flames resembling a volcanic eruption.

According to local authorities, the drilling project had been organized to help provide irrigation water during Aceh’s dry season. Police chief Trie Aprianto said workers noticed unusual amounts of mud and sand erupting from the borehole while drilling to a depth of roughly 300 feet. Crews attempted to remove pipes and stabilize the well, but hours later the trapped gas ignited violently.

At least three homes near the site suffered heavy damage from falling debris and mud. Officials evacuated around 52 residents from the surrounding area as emergency teams rushed in to contain the blaze. No deaths or serious injuries were reported, a result many residents called “miraculous” considering the scale of the explosion.

Videos shared widely online showed a massive column of fire roaring from the ground while thick mud rained down on nearby buildings and palm trees. Social media users compared the scene to an oil-field blowout or a volcanic eruption.

Emergency crews eventually extinguished the flames, and authorities have launched an investigation into whether proper geological surveys and drilling safety procedures were followed before work began. Energy experts noted that Indonesia’s volcanic geology and hydrocarbon-rich sediment layers can create dangerous underground gas accumulations, especially in rural drilling projects with limited technical oversight.

The incident has renewed concerns about unregulated drilling activity across parts of Indonesia, where communities often undertake small-scale water and resource projects without advanced subsurface mapping equipment. Officials are now monitoring the site for additional gas leaks or ground instability.

Massive Fire Sweeps Through Manila Community

A huge fire tore through a densely populated neighborhood in Manila, Philippines, leaving thousands of families displaced and destroying more than 2,000 homes, according to local authorities.
