He suffered a humiliating defeat in the election. Today, as trust in Trump’s intentions with Tehran erodes, he risks being remembered in American political memory as a “Second Carter”—a politician who showed softness toward the Islamic Republic and paid a heavy political price.

For Khamenei, too, such a deal could be politically fatal. For years, the regime has built its legitimacy on anti-American rhetoric, resistance, and defiance. A secret agreement with the “Great Satan,” struck without the consent of the people, would shake the regime’s hardline base and convince the Iranian public that the entire conflict has been nothing more than political theater. A regime that loses its ideological legitimacy inevitably loses its capacity for repression as well.

The reality is that a covert agreement lacking transparency will not bring peace or transformation. It will only deepen public mistrust, galvanize opposition against both parties, and pave the way for political downfall—on both sides.

In the end, neither Khamenei will gain lasting stability, nor will Trump reap a meaningful political victory.
This is not a win-win scenario.
This is mutual collapse.
