Iran May Become the Next North Korea of Internet Isolation
Something Must Be Done

The Islamic regime in Tehran is moving toward total digital isolation: cutting off Iranians from the global internet, blocking VPNs, targeting Starlink, and giving access only to the regime's officials and approved "journalists" or agents.

This mirrors North Korea’s control over information and poses a severe threat to freedom of expression, access to information, and basic human rights.

For decades, Iranians have resisted the regime’s strict bans on satellite dishes and receivers, which remain illegal and punishable by law. Owning one has long been an act of quiet defiance, allowing families to access independent news and connect to the outside world despite state censorship.

The internet presents a similar challenge: without international support and advanced technologies, it is nearly impossible for ordinary Iranians to maintain reliable access. Currently, millions are cut off entirely, leaving them isolated from information, communication, and the global community.

رژیم اسلامی حاکم بر تهران به‌سوی انزوای کامل دیجیتال حرکت می‌کند: قطع دسترسی مردم ایران به اینترنت جهانی، مسدودسازی فیلترشکن‌ها، هدف‌گرفتن استارلینک و محدود کردن دسترسی فقط به مقام‌های حکومتی و «خبرنگاران» یا عوامل مورد تایید حکومت.

این روند، بازتابی از الگوی کنترل اطلاعات در کره شمالی است و تهدیدی جدی علیه آزادی بیان، دسترسی به اطلاعات و حقوق بنیادین بشر به‌شمار می‌آید.

دهه‌هاست که ایرانیان در برابر ممنوعیت‌های سخت‌گیرانه حکومت درباره دیش‌ها و گیرنده‌های ماهواره‌ای مقاومت کرده‌اند؛ تجهیزاتی که همچنان غیرقانونی و مشمول مجازات هستند. داشتن ماهواره برای سال‌ها نوعی نافرمانی خاموش بوده است؛ راهی برای دسترسی خانواده‌ها به اخبار مستقل و ارتباط با جهان بیرون، در برابر سانسور دولتی.

اینترنت نیز چالشی مشابه ایجاد کرده است: بدون حمایت بین‌المللی و فناوری‌های پیشرفته، حفظ دسترسی پایدار برای شهروندان عادی تقریباً ناممکن است. در حال حاضر، میلیون‌ها نفر به‌طور کامل قطع شده‌اند و از اطلاعات، ارتباطات و جامعهٔ جهانی منزوی مانده‌اند.
