What determines the price of Telegram Premium

Yesterday, on Valentine's Day, Telegram announced a promotion that allowed you to gift a Premium subscription to another user with a discount of up to 40%.

Many users noticed that discount size was less than they expected, and some even saw that on February 13 the subscription price was increased.

Here is what @tginfoen has learned about Premium pricing:

1. First of all prices (both for subscription for me and for subscription as a gift) are calculated in dollars, and then converted into user's local currency. Here is how the conversion works: Telegram Premium FAQ - Can I pay in my local currency.
2. Prices for a subscription for me and a subscription as a gift are calculated differently: the price "for me" depends on user's location based on user's phone number, and the price of a gift depends neither on the location of the giver nor on the location of the recipient.
3. The price of gifts is recalculated every hour. Whether the original price in dollars changes, or only changes in the exchange rate are taken into account, is unknown.

Now it's easier to gift Telegram Premium

Developers have improved the @PremiumBot.

Now you can gift somebody with the subscription by sending /gift command, which makes a special button show up. The button allows you to pick a user from your chat list. The list is filtered to only show contacts, non-contacts, and bots.

If you will try to gift the subscription to a user with an active Premium subscription or a bot, the bot will respond with following message:

"This bot can't help you purchase Telegram Premium as a Gift for this user. This could be because the user already has a Telegram Premium subscription."

Reactions on behalf of channels

Now, on behalf of your public channels, you can not only send messages to public groups but also leave reactions under them, as well as participate in polls.

To act on behalf of a channel, select a channel you own to the left of the message input line. When a channel is selected, all reactions and votes will be sent on behalf of that channel.

You cannot mix reactions on your behalf and your channels. For example, if you first put a reaction on your behalf, and then the second on behalf of the channel, then the first reaction will change its author to the channel.

Reactions on behalf of chats are also available, but only for the chat creator. To do this, the chat owner must give himself the right to anonymity, then he will be able not only to leave anonymous messages but also to put anonymous reactions.

@tginfo noticed Telegram Premium giveaways functionality added to Fragment.com's codebase. The change was detected thanks to @tgcrawl's automated analysis. Earlier we've already reported about this feature surfacing in Telegram for macOS localization files.

The Fragment platform is considered to be Telegram's partner, designated to provide an option to buy Telegram's Premium subscription, usernames, and anonymous numbers using TON cryptocurrency. All the services can be paid for using QR codes, which are supposed to be scanned in the Tonkeeper wallet.

Other noteworthy mentions in the code
• Ability to specify the number of subscriptions.
• Ability to specify the number of months — probably for Premium duration.
• There's a possible fee for the giveaway functionality.

Telegram Premium has almost 3.5 million subscribers

In Pavel Durov's latest blog post, while discussing the updates, he mentioned the number of Telegram Premium subscribers, which is "almost 3.5 million".

Based on previous statements from the messenger, Telegram actively engages with 800 million monthly users, providing an approximate estimate of the Premium user base at 0.4% or roughly one in every 233 users.

In December, 2022, we reported that Telegram reached 1 million Premium subscribers. So, in just under a year, the messenger has managed to attract an additional 2.5 million Premium users.

Premium Subscribers Can Now More Easily Hide Their Last Seen Time

Since today, Telegram Premium subscribers who choose to hide their last seen time will be able to see the last seen time of users who have not hidden it.

Please note: you will only see the last seen time of another user if they have not hidden their online from you. Having a Telegram Premium subscription does not allow you to bypass other users' privacy settings.

Reminder: before, if you hid your online status from another user, you lost the ability to see their last seen time, even if they didn't hide it from you.

Get Premium for Helping Telegram Send SMS Codes

Telegram has launched a program which allows users to get Premium for sending SMS messages with OTP codes to other users. A user from Indonesia shared screenshots of the feature with @tginfo.

Terms of Service have appeared for the new program, which is called “Peer-to-Peer Login Program”.

On the page Telegram informs that only users from some countries can participate. Telegram will be using user’s phone to send no more than 150 SMS codes monthly, at the user’s expense. When the user reaches the minimum quota, they will be rewarded with a transferable gift code that grants access to a monthly Telegram Premium subscription. The messenger won't compensate carrier rates and fees for sending the messages.

Telegram warns that theoretically program participants can see phone numbers of the users who receive the OTP codes. The same way, receivers will know the codes are sent from other Telegram users.

@tginfo confirmed existence of the feature in Telegram for Android 10.8.1 (4404) code. The Terms of Service point out that the program is only available to Android users.

We speculate that the program will be used in countries which have high SMS fees, like Indonesia.
