According to the account of an eyewitness, on Friday, January 9, 2026, during protest gatherings in the city of Baharestan, Isfahan Province, security forces opened fire on protesters. The witness said the gathering was entirely peaceful and attended by families, with people chanting slogans.
According to the witness, before the shooting began it became clear that snipers had been positioned on top of buildings, banks, and commercial centers. While protesters were chanting without violence, security forces suddenly started to shoot at the first line of protesters, killing dozens of people within moments. Because many had attended with their families, people tried to move toward the bodies to help their companions, but the witness said anyone who approached the bodies was shot.
The witness stated that some individuals who attempted to help the wounded were shot at the scene. According to the account, security forces fired “finishing shots” at the injured, preventing them from surviving and blocking people from reaching the bodies. Among them was Mohsen, a protester who was shot in the back of the leg while trying to help his friend Shahram, who had been struck by eight bullets. Mohsen later died.
According to the witness, after the crowd was dispersed, gunfire continued in nearby alleys and streets, resulting in additional deaths. Some residents opened their homes to shelter people, but the witness said security forces shot at anyone seen in the alleys. It was also reported that one person was killed in front of their home, in the presence of family members.
The witness said security forces did not allow anyone to move the bodies. After the killings, the bodies were piled on top of one another and left at street corners, an act the witness said was intended to instill fear and serve as a warning to others. The following morning, municipal vehicles arrived to remove the bodies, and fire trucks were deployed to wash the remaining blood from the streets.
According to the witness, the next day families went to Bagh-e Rezvan to search for bodies and were told that hundreds of bodies had already been transferred. Due to the sheer number of corpses, identification was not possible. After several days, families were asked to send only a limited number of relatives for identification. The witness said separate sections or warehouses were designated for each city, indicating the scale of the killings.
The witness also claimed that some wounded individuals who were still alive were stacked together and abandoned in the morgue, denied medical assistance, and later died there. According to the account, in some cases families seeking the return of bodies were subjected to security conditions, including being forced to declare that the deceased was a member of the Basij and had been killed by “Israeli terrorists,” or to pay large sums of money.
In closing, the witness described the city’s current situation as resembling martial law, saying people are afraid to go outside because indiscriminate shooting at vehicles has been reported. As the witness put it: “Iran has become an open-air prison.”

According to a video published by Vahid Online, footage from Saturday, January 9, 2026, shows a line of trucks carrying bodies outside the entrance of the Kahrizak Forensic Medicine Center. As described with the images, “the bodies were taken into warehouses, and families whose relatives were missing were told to search among the bodies to identify them.”
At the same time, reports have emerged of wounded individuals and bodies being transported by trucks, denial of medical treatment, and demands for money from families in exchange for the return of bodies. Reports also point to a pattern of gunfire aimed at vital areas of the body, including the head and neck, as well as widespread cases of severe eye injuries caused by pellet shots—raising concerns about shoot-to-kill practices by the authorities.
The Iran Human Rights Documentation Center has also received eyewitness accounts. One witness from Arak said: “Bodies were piled on top of bodies… the morgues have no space.” However, due to severe internet shutdowns and communication restrictions, access to independent information remains limited, and the final figures for casualties and injuries cannot be independently verified.

Aylin SahraGard, a 24-year-old Baha’i citizen from Kerman, was arrested on Tuesday evening, January 23, after security forces raided her family’s home. According to reports, the officers—one woman and seven men—searched the residence and confiscated personal belongings, including a laptop, the mobile phones of family members, and religious books. She was transferred to Kerman Central Prison six days later.
The arrest comes amid warnings by the Baha’i International Community that the organized repression of Baha’is in Iran has intensified in recent months. While such persecution has been longstanding, reports indicate that the crackdown has escalated recently—particularly following the 12-day war with Israel—through coordinated raids, arrests, and economic pressure. The Baha’i International Community has previously called on the international community to take urgent action to halt the systematic violations of the rights of Baha’is and other citizens.

Following brief and extremely limited moments of internet access, accounts recently posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) describe widespread and deadly gunfire by security forces against civilians during protests. Hossein Qashqaei, one of the witnesses, wrote in a series of posts that security forces were “firing brutally and spraying people with gunfire.” He said that he and several others took shelter behind a door to avoid being shot, but that location was also targeted, and several people were hit and fell to the ground in front of them. He wrote: “I don’t know how or why I survived.”
In another post, Qashqaei described the killing of a protester before his eyes: “He was right in front of me, his fists clenched, shouting ‘Javid Shah (Long Live Shah).’ A bullet hit his throat and he fell to the ground. He died in my arms. It felt like losing my brother.”
Following these accounts, Sarah Shamsaei, Qashqaei’s wife, wrote in a separate post that during the protests “the people of the city had come out of their homes and poured into the streets,” and the streets of Lahijan were filled with people. She added: “The city belonged to the people; everyone was happy. Then suddenly they started shooting and spraying people with bullets.” Shamsaei wrote that since that day “the whole city has been overcome by grief,” adding: “All of Iran smells of blood.”
These accounts have emerged amid severe internet shutdowns and communication restrictions, which make independent verification of the details impossible. Nonetheless, the testimonies once again point to the lethal use of firearms against unarmed protesters and the climate of fear imposed across cities in Iran.

Exclusive: According to an account received by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, during the nationwide protests a family spent three days searching for their son, who had left home to protest and never returned. In anguish and uncertainty, the family…
According to additional information obtained by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC), the individual whose account of being rescued from the Kahrizak Forensic Center was previously published was a teenager under 18 years old. According to this account, during the three days he was held among the bodies transferred to the Kahrizak, he heard the ringing of cell phones among the corpses and smelled the intense stench of decay.
The witness reported that whenever groans from the wounded were heard, they were shortly followed by the sound of gunfire and the cessation of the groaning, strongly indicating that security forces delivered fatal shots to wounded individuals who were still alive. The teenager was eventually released from the Kahrizak Forensic Center in extremely poor physical condition.
The Iran Human Rights Documentation Center has communicated several times with the teenager’s family through intermediaries and received additional information. These details raise serious concerns regarding the treatment of the wounded, violations of the right to life, and extrajudicial killings, including of minors, during the suppression of protests.

Based on reports published by multiple media outlets, Arzoo Abedi was killed on Friday, January 9, 2026, after sustaining a gunshot wound to the head from a military-grade weapon. A video circulating online shows her mother mourning at her gravesite and condemning the Islamic Republic for her daughter’s death, the killing of civilians, and the presence of forces affiliated with the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd al-Shaabi) and Lebanese Hezbollah in Iran. In the video, her mother explicitly alleges that members of the Iraqi militia were responsible for shooting and killing her daughter.
Arzoo Abedi, a 50-year-old woman, was killed on Bagh Daryacheh Street in Isfahan, Isfahan Province, while in the company of her two children—a 19-year-old son and a 25-year-old daughter. Three days later, on Monday, January 12, her body was buried at night in Dorcheh Cemetery, near the city of Isfahan, under the condition that no public funeral ceremony be held and in the presence of a large number of security personnel.

The Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC) has learned through a reliable source that Pedram Argha, a 31-year-old dentist and resident of Kermanshah, was shot during protests on Thursday, January 8, 2026, in the city. According to the source, Pedram Argha encountered security forces after leaving his clinic. The officers were engaged in a confrontation with another man and were attempting to assault him, at which point Argha intervened to protect the individual. During the encounter, Argha was shot from two directions: one bullet from behind and another from the front. Following the incident, bystanders transferred him back to his clinic and informed his family. He was subsequently taken to a private hospital, where he fell into a coma and ultimately died on Saturday, January 10, 2026. Pedram Argha was an adherent of the Yarsani faith.
According to received information, authorities pressured his family to either pay one billion tomans (approximately 2,000 USD) or identify Pedram as a member of the Basij militia in order to release his body. Since Argha’s father was unable to pay this amount, the family was compelled to accept the designation of him as a regime supporter.
Due to severe communication restrictions and ongoing internet outages, independent verification of all details of these accounts is currently not possible.
