Internet monitoring organization NetBlocks announced on Monday, January 19, 2026, that Iran’s internet shutdown has entered its twelfth day.

According to NetBlocks’ assessments, while some users have experienced limited access in recent days, overall connectivity remains extremely low, and the Islamic Republic appears to be testing a heavily filtered version of the national internet.

NetBlocks reports that during this period, filtering systems have intermittently allowed certain messages to pass, suggesting efforts by the authorities to roll out a tightly controlled intranet. This situation continues as widespread internet and communications have been cut since the evening of Thursday, January 8, 2026, coinciding with reports of a severe crackdown on protests that has left thousands of protesters killed or injured—claims that Iranian officials have attributed to the actions of “armed terrorists.”

Eyewitness from Arak: 70 Eye Injuries and at Least 200 Killed in One Day

Due to severe communication restrictions and the ongoing nationwide internet shutdown, independent verification of these claims is not currently possible. Nevertheless, a resident of Arak has provided an eyewitness account describing an intense and violent crackdown on recent protests, citing widespread use of force by security forces, high casualties, and an atmosphere of fear and extreme insecurity across the city.

According to the witness, during the days of protest—particularly on Friday, January 8, 2026—security forces opened direct fire using live ammunition, pellet guns, and tear gas. The witness alleges that protesters were lured into specific streets through ambushes, with the involvement of purported “leaders,” turning these areas into sites of mass killing.

The account references specific incidents, including the killing of a four-year-old child: “A four-year-old child was shot inside a pharmacy and died.” The witness also reports that a young man was shot, and when his father went to help him, “the father was also shot; the son was killed, and the father fell into a coma.”

The witness further reports extensive eye injuries, quoting a local doctor: “Nearly 70 eyes were removed.” According to the witness, the number of people killed in Arak reached “at least 200” in a single day.

The eyewitness also refers to the name and memory of Mehrshad Shahidi, a prominent victim of the 2022 protests, stating that when crowds passed in front of his family home, people chanted loudly, “Mehrshad, rest in peace.” The witness later learned that one of Shahidi’s close relatives was struck by pellets on the same day and lost their eyesight.

In another part of the account, the witness points to repression beyond Arak, stating that, based on information received, Lorestan Province was placed under martial law.

The testimony includes deeply disturbing allegations regarding the conduct of security forces. The witness reports that one member of the forces allegedly stated at their workplace about a detained woman: “She had small breasts and was not to his liking,” a comment that raises grave concerns about sexual violence and abuse against detained women.

The witness also alleges the execution of an injured detainee. According to the account, an acquaintance who was hit by pellets in the leg and taken to hospital was later “detained by Basij forces and executed the following morning.”

The account further describes severe obstacles faced by families seeking to recover the bodies of their loved ones, including demands for large sums of money, summarizing the situation as follows: “Bodies are piled on top of bodies… the morgues have no space.”

If substantiated, the allegations described above may indicate grave human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention, torture, and sexual violence, underscoring the urgent need for independent investigations and international accountability.

A video has circulated showing a high level of violence by security forces against protesters and civilians. The footage is reported to have been recorded around January 10, 2026, or in the days leading up to that date, in Haft-Hoz Square, Narmak, south of Sarsabz Intersection, in Tehran (Tehran Province).

The video shows a young man suffering severe bleeding from a gunshot wound to the leg. Voices can be heard as bystanders attempt to stop the bleeding; one person says they do not have a belt, while another removes their belt to use it as a tourniquet to help save the injured man’s life.

A green laser light is also visible in the footage. Previously, a witness told the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center that security forces use laser lights to aim at and target protesters. The witness reported that during demonstrations people warned each other: “If you see a green laser, immediately lie down so you won’t be shot.”

Due to the severe internet restrictions and ongoing shutdown in Iran, the circulation of images has been limited. As a result, independent verification of the exact time and location is not possible; however, available evidence indicates that the footage is related to recent protests in Iran.

Expansion of Judicial Prosecution Against Protest Supporters; Assets Seized and Businesses Shut Down

The Tehran Prosecutor’s Office has announced that, as part of ongoing measures against nationwide protests, criminal cases have been opened against 15 athletes and artists, 10 signatories of the House of Cinema statement, and 60 business units on charges of supporting the protests, with the assets of some individuals seized. According to state-affiliated media, judicial authorities claim that this support played a “provocative role” in the unrest and that, in some cases, courts may issue orders requiring defendants to pay compensation for alleged damages.

These actions come as protest gatherings, strikes by shopkeepers, and the closure of business units began in Tehran in early January and later spread to markets and commercial centers in other cities. Similar judicial actions against well-known figures, artists, and business owners who supported protests have occurred in previous years, including summonses, work bans, asset seizures, and forced closures. Among recent cases is the arrest of Mohammad Saeedi-Nia, owner of the Saeedi-Nia café chain. Judicial officials have stated that all of his cafés and restaurants have been sealed and that steps have been taken toward the confiscation of his assets.

In recent days, it was also reported that Reza Shekari, a Persepolis FC player, and Omid Ravankhah, head coach of Iran’s U-23 national team, were briefly detained at Tehran’s international airport upon returning to Iran, reportedly due to their support for the protests.

Human rights observers say these developments reflect an expansion of repression beyond street protesters, aimed at exerting economic and social pressure on protest supporters—measures that may constitute violations of freedom of expression, the right to peaceful protest, and the prohibition of collective punishment.

On January 19, 2026, Tasnim news agency affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), citing the public relations office of the Tharallah Corps in Kerman, reported the identification and dismantling of what it described as an “organized network” made up of Bahá’í individuals allegedly involved in unrest in the province.

The statement claimed that the network’s leaders were in direct contact with coordinators based in the United States and Israel and that, following the outbreak of protests last week, they organized members through virtual groups and deployed them in operational teams, allegedly using various types of equipment and weapons to carry out what it called “anti-security actions.”

The announcement further stated that the main figures of the network in Kerman had been arrested, while other active members had been identified and were being pursued.

It also claimed that two other “anti-security networks” linked to the same group had previously been dismantled in recent months.

According to a report received by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, one of the Bahá’í citizens arrested in Kerman is Peyvand Naeemi. He was detained by security forces at his workplace in the city at 2:00 p.m. on January 8, 2026.

Exclusive: According to an account received by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, during the nationwide protests a family spent three days searching for their son, who had left home to protest and never returned. In anguish and uncertainty, the family first searched hospitals, then went to Behesht Zahra, and ultimately found themselves at Kahrizak—a place whose shocking images of large numbers of protesters’ bodies circulated widely on social media and in the press.

At Kahrizak, the family was forced to search among a mass of bodies for their child, where hope and terror were intertwined. In the end, against all fears, they found their son alive. He had been severely wounded by gunfire and, according to this account, had remained without water or food for three days, lying motionless inside a plastic body bag used for the dead, out of fear of a fatal “finishing shot” by security forces.

According to this report, the family ultimately succeeded in transferring him to a hospital for medical treatment.

This account, while deeply distressing, captures a rare moment of survival amid death. At the same time, it offers a stark picture of the conditions surrounding the crackdown on protests, the treatment of the wounded, and the pressures placed on families seeking access to care—families left wandering between hospitals, morgues, and security facilities in search of their loved ones.

It should be noted that, due to severe internet restrictions and shutdowns in Iran, independent verification of this account is not currently possible.

According to the account of an eyewitness, on Friday, January 9, 2026, during protest gatherings in the city of Baharestan, Isfahan Province, security forces opened fire on protesters. The witness said the gathering was entirely peaceful and attended by families, with people chanting slogans.

According to the witness, before the shooting began it became clear that snipers had been positioned on top of buildings, banks, and commercial centers. While protesters were chanting without violence, security forces suddenly started to shoot at the first line of protesters, killing dozens of people within moments. Because many had attended with their families, people tried to move toward the bodies to help their companions, but the witness said anyone who approached the bodies was shot.

The witness stated that some individuals who attempted to help the wounded were shot at the scene. According to the account, security forces fired “finishing shots” at the injured, preventing them from surviving and blocking people from reaching the bodies. Among them was Mohsen, a protester who was shot in the back of the leg while trying to help his friend Shahram, who had been struck by eight bullets. Mohsen later died.

According to the witness, after the crowd was dispersed, gunfire continued in nearby alleys and streets, resulting in additional deaths. Some residents opened their homes to shelter people, but the witness said security forces shot at anyone seen in the alleys. It was also reported that one person was killed in front of their home, in the presence of family members.

The witness said security forces did not allow anyone to move the bodies. After the killings, the bodies were piled on top of one another and left at street corners, an act the witness said was intended to instill fear and serve as a warning to others. The following morning, municipal vehicles arrived to remove the bodies, and fire trucks were deployed to wash the remaining blood from the streets.

According to the witness, the next day families went to Bagh-e Rezvan to search for bodies and were told that hundreds of bodies had already been transferred. Due to the sheer number of corpses, identification was not possible. After several days, families were asked to send only a limited number of relatives for identification. The witness said separate sections or warehouses were designated for each city, indicating the scale of the killings.

The witness also claimed that some wounded individuals who were still alive were stacked together and abandoned in the morgue, denied medical assistance, and later died there. According to the account, in some cases families seeking the return of bodies were subjected to security conditions, including being forced to declare that the deceased was a member of the Basij and had been killed by “Israeli terrorists,” or to pay large sums of money.

In closing, the witness described the city’s current situation as resembling martial law, saying people are afraid to go outside because indiscriminate shooting at vehicles has been reported. As the witness put it: “Iran has become an open-air prison.”

According to a video published by Vahid Online, footage from Saturday, January 9, 2026, shows a line of trucks carrying bodies outside the entrance of the Kahrizak Forensic Medicine Center. As described with the images, “the bodies were taken into warehouses, and families whose relatives were missing were told to search among the bodies to identify them.”

At the same time, reports have emerged of wounded individuals and bodies being transported by trucks, denial of medical treatment, and demands for money from families in exchange for the return of bodies. Reports also point to a pattern of gunfire aimed at vital areas of the body, including the head and neck, as well as widespread cases of severe eye injuries caused by pellet shots—raising concerns about shoot-to-kill practices by the authorities.

The Iran Human Rights Documentation Center has also received eyewitness accounts. One witness from Arak said: “Bodies were piled on top of bodies… the morgues have no space.” However, due to severe internet shutdowns and communication restrictions, access to independent information remains limited, and the final figures for casualties and injuries cannot be independently verified.

Aylin SahraGard, a 24-year-old Baha’i citizen from Kerman, was arrested on Tuesday evening, January 23, after security forces raided her family’s home. According to reports, the officers—one woman and seven men—searched the residence and confiscated personal belongings, including a laptop, the mobile phones of family members, and religious books. She was transferred to Kerman Central Prison six days later.

The arrest comes amid warnings by the Baha’i International Community that the organized repression of Baha’is in Iran has intensified in recent months. While such persecution has been longstanding, reports indicate that the crackdown has escalated recently—particularly following the 12-day war with Israel—through coordinated raids, arrests, and economic pressure. The Baha’i International Community has previously called on the international community to take urgent action to halt the systematic violations of the rights of Baha’is and other citizens.

Following brief and extremely limited moments of internet access, accounts recently posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) describe widespread and deadly gunfire by security forces against civilians during protests. Hossein Qashqaei, one of the witnesses, wrote in a series of posts that security forces were “firing brutally and spraying people with gunfire.” He said that he and several others took shelter behind a door to avoid being shot, but that location was also targeted, and several people were hit and fell to the ground in front of them. He wrote: “I don’t know how or why I survived.”

In another post, Qashqaei described the killing of a protester before his eyes: “He was right in front of me, his fists clenched, shouting ‘Javid Shah (Long Live Shah).’ A bullet hit his throat and he fell to the ground. He died in my arms. It felt like losing my brother.”

Following these accounts, Sarah Shamsaei, Qashqaei’s wife, wrote in a separate post that during the protests “the people of the city had come out of their homes and poured into the streets,” and the streets of Lahijan were filled with people. She added: “The city belonged to the people; everyone was happy. Then suddenly they started shooting and spraying people with bullets.” Shamsaei wrote that since that day “the whole city has been overcome by grief,” adding: “All of Iran smells of blood.”

These accounts have emerged amid severe internet shutdowns and communication restrictions, which make independent verification of the details impossible. Nonetheless, the testimonies once again point to the lethal use of firearms against unarmed protesters and the climate of fear imposed across cities in Iran.
