Hadi Abbasian, a resident of Shirvan, North Khorasan province, has been transferred to the city’s prison following his arrest by security forces of the Islamic Republic. Reports received indicate that security agents raided his home on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, violently assaulted him during the arrest, and beat him so severely that he lost consciousness. He was reportedly taken first to a hospital and later transferred to Shirvan Prison. Images published after the raid show extensive damage and disorder inside his home.

According to informed sources, Abbasian’s arrest is linked to his support for the nationwide protests of January 2026. He had previously posted videos on social media expressing support for protesters and their demands.

Two days after his arrest, state-affiliated media outlets released a video described as a “confession” by Abbasian. Iran’s Mehr News Agency, quoting local police and judicial officials in Shirvan, accused him of participating in the protests, “encouraging unrest,” and spreading reports related to his alleged death. Authorities further claimed that he had attempted to stage a “fake killing scenario.”

The prosecutor of Shirvan also alleged that Abbasian had used social media to encourage people to engage in “rioting” and “destruction of public property.” However, no independent evidence has been presented to substantiate these claims, and judicial and security authorities have provided no information regarding his condition, access to legal counsel, or the circumstances of his detention.

In recent years, the Islamic Republic’s security and judicial authorities have repeatedly relied on forced confessions from detainees, particularly in political and security-related cases, as grounds for issuing harsh sentences and securing convictions.

Based on published reports, Hadi Abbasian, Mohsen Babaeian, and Mohammad Amin Mandani have been sentenced to death by Revolutionary Courts, while Omid Goudarzvand Chegini’s death sentence has been upheld. Reports of torture, denial of access to counsel, and a lack of transparency regarding the evidence and proceedings have heightened concerns about violations of these prisoners’ rights.

Hadi Abbasian, 38, a resident of Shirvan in North Khorasan Province, was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of Bojnourd. He was formally notified of the sentence in Shirvan Prison on October 5, 2026. Abbasian, who posted videos supporting protesters during the January 2026 protests, was arrested in April–May 2026. According to published reports, he was denied access to counsel and subjected to torture in custody. Reports also indicate that he was hospitalized after sustaining physical injuries and that state media broadcast statements presented as his confessions, which human rights sources have described as coerced.

Mohsen Babaeian, who was arrested in connection with the January 2026 protests, was sentenced to death on a charge of (Moharebeh) “waging war against God” by Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari. He is held in Greater Tehran Prison. Although he has been notified of the sentence, clear information about the evidence cited by the court, his access to counsel, and the arguments presented in his defense remains unavailable.

The same court branch sentenced Mohammad Amin Mandani, also held in Greater Tehran Prison, to death on a charge of “cooperation with hostile states.” His lawyer was notified of the sentence on September 29, 2026; the recirculation of the news in recent days does not indicate that a new sentence has been issued. Mandani was arrested in March–April 2026, and reports indicate that his access to counsel was restricted during the early stages of the case. Among the allegations against him is that he shared the locations of certain sites. Details of the court’s evidence and his defense have not been made public.

In a separate case, reports indicate that the death sentence of Omid Goudarzvand Chegini, 37, held in Choubindar Prison in Qazvin, has been upheld. Branch 2 of the Qazvin Revolutionary Court issued the original sentence in a case concerning damage to the entrance of the provincial governor’s office. Arrested on January 8, 2026, he has denied participating in damaging or setting fire to the entrance. According to human rights reports, he spent approximately 40 days in solitary confinement at an IRGC Intelligence detention facility, was tortured to extract a confession, and was denied access to a lawyer of his choosing.

These reported sentences underscore the need to halt executions and independently investigate allegations of torture and violations of defense rights. Effective access to a lawyer of their choosing and the opportunity to challenge their sentences through fair proceedings are fundamental rights of all these prisoners.
