The seventh-day memorial for Khosrow Alikordi, a human rights lawyer and former political prisoner, was held today in Mashhad with a large turnout of citizens, justice-seeking families, lawyers, and civil society activists. The gathering quickly took on an atmosphere of protest, as participants honored Alikordi’s memory while chanting slogans in support of justice and against state repression. Some protesters expressed their support for Reza Pahlavi, the exiled former Crown Prince.
The ceremony soon became tense when security forces stormed the area. Officers blocked the streets surrounding Ghadir Mosque, preventing many from entering, and ultimately moved in on the crowd, arresting a number of activists and attendees.
Those detained today include:
Narges Mohammadi, Sepideh Gholian, Pouran Nazemi, Noura Haghi, Hasti Amiri, Aliyeh Motalebzadeh, Ali Adinezadeh, Hassan Bagherinia, Asadollah Fakhimi, Akbar Amini, Reza Adinezadeh, Abolfazl Abri, Habib Fadaei, Kamal Jafarizadeh, Davood Alikordi, and Ahmad Alikordi.
Narges Mohammadi — a prominent human rights defender and Nobel Peace Prize laureate — was violently arrested while addressing the crowd, a move that sparked widespread alarm among activists and human rights organizations.
Reports also indicate that security forces attempted to detain additional members of the Alikordi family, though some of these efforts were thwarted by those present. The event was marked by clashes, scattered violence, and heavy repression, forcing many attendees to leave the area.
According to HRANA, later the same day, Javad Alikordi, Khosrow Alikordi’s brother, was also arrested by security forces at his workplace in Mashhad. Earlier, he had gone live on Instagram, reporting that security agents had stormed the memorial, beaten several people, and detained others. He also stated that officers used batons and tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowd and arrest citizens.
Today’s memorial for Khosrow Alikordi became far more than a remembrance ceremony; it turned into a scene of protest, civil solidarity, and harsh security crackdowns — a reflection of the persistent pressure faced by Iran’s civil society and human rights community.
