Mohsen Rashidi Khaniabadi was among those killed during the January 2026 crackdown in Iran. His sister, Roya Rashidi Khaniabadi, spoke about him and the families’ pursuit of justice at an Iran Human Rights Documentation Center side event during the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Roya said that after 10 years and three months apart, she never had the chance to embrace her brother again, hear his voice, or ask what happened on the night he was killed. She spoke as the voice of Mohsen and other families seeking justice.
She demanded the truth about who fired, who gave the orders, who was responsible for transporting the wounded, and why families were kept in the dark. She urged the UN to preserve evidence, support independent and impartial investigations, hold those responsible accountable, and speak for prisoners and people facing execution: “We want answers. We want justice.”
Roya vowed that their call for justice would not be silenced until the truth was established and justice delivered, and that the names of Mohsen and others killed would live on: “You are not here, but your voice is here, and we are still standing.”

Ten people. Ten real stories. All imprisoned over debt—construction loans, bounced cheques, unpaid mehriyeh—under laws that jail people for being unable to pay, collected and documented by IHRDC.
https://iranhrdc.org/category/english/publications/witness-testimony/
Case 10 — Ali (pseudonym)
Just one week after his wedding, Ali received notice of his wife’s claim for mehriyeh, which he says she had initiated before the wedding. The start of their married life marked the beginning of years of legal battles involving dozens of court cases. His bank accounts were frozen, and a travel ban prevented him from taking up his scholarship.

Setayesh Golshani was three years old when persecution forced her family to leave Iran. A year later, she arrived in Australia with her parents by ship and was transferred to the offshore asylum processing centre on Nauru.
She spent more than two years in detention before being released into community detention in Brisbane.
As she grew older, Setayesh found strength through taekwondo. The sport became her refuge — a place where she could focus, compete and begin to imagine a future of her own. By sixteen, she had become a multi-award-winning athlete.
But the uncertainty of her childhood continues to shape her life. Her immigration status limits her opportunities to compete internationally, study and build a secure future in Australia. Although she was recognized as a refugee in 2019, her status remains unresolved.
Setayesh continues to advocate for the chance to remain in Australia, where she has grown up and built her life. She also fears returning to Iran, where she says she could face persecution as a young woman and apostate.
Her journey is one of a girl who has faced extraordinary challenges and refused to let them define her. Through taekwondo, she has found strength, purpose and a voice of her own.
Now, she is fighting for the opportunity to turn that hard-won strength into a future.

Mahboubeh Shabani, a prisoner sentenced to death at Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, was forcibly transferred from Aramesh Ward to solitary confinement on Monday, September 28, 2026. HRANA reported the transfer.
That day, Sepideh Gholian, an activist and former political prisoner, wrote in a post on X that prison guards had told Shabani: “Because Trump has supported you, we will execute you.” Gholian also reported that the phones in Aramesh Ward had been confiscated. She described the prisoners as living in intense fear and anxiety and said the measure might extend to other security wards.
In a voice message released from prison before her transfer to solitary confinement, Shabani said that her death sentence had been communicated to her lawyer. She warned of the danger facing political prisoners sentenced to death and appealed to the public and human rights organizations for help.
Shabani, a 30-year-old civil engineer, was arrested in Mashhad on February 2, 2026. Reports have linked her case to transporting injured protesters to hospital on her personal motorcycle during the January protests. After spending a prolonged period in solitary confinement, she was transferred to the women’s ward. Branch One of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court, presided over by Gholamreza Akbari Moghadam, sentenced her to death on the charge of “operational action to strengthen Israel, the United States, and affiliated opposition groups.”

Ali Hemati Sistani and Majid Nikandish, two protesters detained during the January 2026 protests in Mashhad, were executed on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. Mizan News Agency, which is affiliated with the Islamic Republic’s judiciary, announced that their executions were carried out after their death sentences were upheld by the Supreme Court.
The two men were arrested in connection with protests held on January 8 and 9 in Mashhad’s Tabarsi district. The judiciary described them as organizers of the protests and alleged that they were involved in events that resulted in the deaths of four security personnel. These allegations have not been independently verified.
According to Iran Human Rights, Branch 1 of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court sentenced Hemati Sistani and Nikandish to death, and Branch 39 of the Supreme Court upheld their sentences. Mizan did not specify the exact charges on which the death sentences were based.
Mizan also claimed that the two men confessed during interrogation to the acts attributed to them and that their trials were held in the presence of lawyers. However, no independent information has been made available about the circumstances of their interrogations, how the statements attributed to them were obtained, or whether they had access to lawyers of their own choosing.
The lack of transparency surrounding the judicial proceedings and interrogation process, particularly in cases resulting in executions, raises serious concerns about violations of the right to a fair trial and the right to life.

Mahsa Piraei’s story is one of freedom, migration, loss, and an enduring search for justice.
Before leaving Iran, Mahsa was active and loved sports and enjoying life. But outside the safety of her family home, compulsory hijab, social restrictions, and fear of the authorities increasingly shaped her everyday life. From a young age, she learned that speaking openly about politics and religion could have consequences, and that she sometimes had to hide parts of her identity in public.
She was detained several times by the morality police because of her hijab and appearance. During one detention, a male officer deliberately injured her foot and intimidated her. Terrified of what might happen, she was too afraid to contact her family. Even after arriving in the UK, that fear stayed with her; for years, seeing a police officer could trigger anxiety and the feeling that she had done something wrong.
Mahsa also experienced discrimination because of her family’s Yarsan background, including hearing people in positions of authority describe Yarsan people as “unclean” or “unworthy.”
The most devastating moment of her life came in September 2022. While Mahsa was in the UK speaking with friends about the protests following the death of Mahsa (Zhina) Amini, her mother, Minoo Majidi, was taking part in demonstrations in her hometown of Kermanshah. She was shot and killed in the street, reportedly struck by more than 160 pellets. Mahsa learned of her mother’s death the following day.
Leaving Iran had not meant leaving fear behind. Years later, the violence she believed she had escaped reached her family and took her mother from her.
For Mahsa, justice is not about revenge. It is about truth and accountability. She hopes that one day, in a fair and independent courtroom, everyone responsible for her mother’s killing will be held accountable—from those who carried out the shooting to those who gave the orders.

Iman Sadeghi, a 20-year-old blogger detained in connection with the January 2026 protests in Kashan, Isfahan Province, faces a prison term of 12 years, six months, and one day on charges related to his media activities and online posts. He was arrested on January 31, 2026, and subsequently transferred to Kashan Prison.
According to information published by Iran International, Sadeghi was sentenced to 12 years, six months, and one day in prison for publishing criminal content against national security, and seven months and 16 days for disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic. Under Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, only the longer of these two prison terms is enforceable. If the ruling becomes final, he would therefore be required to serve 12 years, six months, and one day. Another charge in his case concerns publishing criminal content in the media and press resulting in defamation.
The report provides no details about the content underlying the charges, Sadeghi’s access to a lawyer, or the court proceedings. His harsh prison sentence reflects the Islamic Republic’s established pattern of using national security charges to suppress freedom of expression and punish social media users. Through this practice, the judiciary disregards fair trial safeguards and uses online posts and the expression of opinions as grounds for imposing years of imprisonment.

Four people arrested in connection with the January 2026 protests, Khosrow Mohammadi-Nia, Masoud Tushmalani, Sirvan Shabani, and Mehdi Nami, have been sentenced to death by Branch 23 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. All four are held in Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj.
According to HRANA, Nami was sentenced to death on a charge of carrying out operational activities on behalf of hostile states. Mohammadi-Nia, Tushmalani, and Shabani received death sentences in a joint case involving charges of (Moharebeh) “waging war against God,” assembly and collusion with intent to undermine national security, and carrying out operational activities on behalf of hostile states. These remain allegations against the defendants; the published reports provide no details of the evidence presented in court.
Nami was arrested at his home in Tehran. The other three men, all from Kermanshah, were arrested during the protests in Eslamshahr. Tushmalani was briefly released on bail before being rearrested a few days later. Shabani is approximately 22 years old.
The reports provide no information about whether the four men had access to lawyers of their choosing, how their trials were conducted, or whether they were able to mount an effective defense. These are essential considerations in assessing respect for the right to a fair trial, particularly in cases resulting in death sentences.

Shahrzad Shahbazi, Alireza Sepahi’s lawyer, warned today, October 4, 2026, that her client was at risk of execution after his family received a call asking them to visit him. “Today he is breathing; perhaps tomorrow he won’t be…” she wrote.
Babak Moradifar, a legal scholar and political activist, also reported on social media that Sepahi had been transferred from the general ward of Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan to solitary confinement and that his family had been told to come for a final visit. His mother, who is serving a five-year prison sentence in the same case, had also been summoned for a final visit with her son, according to Moradifar. He warned that Sepahi was scheduled to be executed tonight.
Sepahi was detained during the January 2026 protests in Isfahan and is a defendant in the case known as “Alikhani Square.” According to information previously received by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC), he and other defendants were tortured to extract confessions. Members of his family were also reportedly detained and tortured to force him to confess.
Sepahi was previously scheduled to be executed at dawn on July 28, but suffered a cardiac emergency while being taken for execution and was transferred to a hospital. He was returned to prison after treatment. His cousin, Abolfazl Sepahi, and Amirhossein Safari were executed that day.
IHRDC previously reported that although Branch 39 of the Supreme Court had granted Sepahi a retrial, Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court rejected his request without examining the merits of the case and sent it for enforcement of the death sentence. Moradifar’s latest post indicates that his lawyer’s efforts to secure a review have failed to halt the execution.

Alireza Sepahi and Alireza Raeisi, two men arrested during the January 2026 protests, were executed at dawn on Monday, October 5, 2026, in Isfahan’s Dastgerd Prison. Mizan, the news agency affiliated with the Islamic Republic’s judiciary, announced that their death sentences had been carried out after being upheld by the Supreme Court. Both were defendants in the “Alikhani Square” case, which concerned events on January 8, 2026. Mizan accused them of involvement in the deaths of four police officers and listed the charges underlying their sentences as including membership in an armed rebel group, (Moharebeh) “waging war against God,” and “corruption on earth.”
The executions were carried out despite numerous reports of torture and forced confessions in the case. According to these reports, Alireza Sepahi was beaten, struck on gunshot wounds to his legs, and forced to witness his mother being tortured. Several defendants also said they were coerced into endorsing prepared statements placing Sepahi at the scene. Reports further indicated that some defendants who retracted their statements in court were subjected to beatings and mock executions to force them to confess again.
Reports concerning Alireza Raeisi indicate that authorities concealed his detention from his family and denied him the right to choose his own lawyer. Raeisi was the cousin of Ramin Raeisi, who was killed during the January protests. Ministry of Intelligence agents arrested him outside Isfahan’s Bagh-e Rezvan Cemetery on January 19, 2026, a day after Ramin’s burial. People close to the family said security agencies refused to acknowledge his detention for several days. Once his whereabouts became known, the family was told he could only have a court-appointed lawyer. His family denied the allegation that he had participated in killing the officers.
Just hours before his execution, on the evening of October 4, Alireza Sepahi and his fiancée, Mahshad Kashani, who was also imprisoned in connection with the January protests, married over the phone from prison. The couple, who had been engaged before their arrests, requested an in-person visit after their marriage ceremony so they could see each other before his execution. Sepahi was executed the following morning.

For more than three years, Zhino Beigzadeh Babamiri has been fighting for the freedom of her father, Rezgar Beigzadeh Babamiri, and for justice in his case.
Rezgar, a Kurdish farmer from Bukan and a father of three, was arrested in April 2023 in connection with the "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests. According to his family, his only act was providing medicine and medical supplies to wounded protesters.
In a letter written from prison, Rezgar described being subjected to torture during interrogation, including electric shocks and mock executions, and said he was coerced into making forced confessions.
In July 2025, Branch 1 of the Urmia Revolutionary Court sentenced him to death on charges including "baghi" (armed rebellion) and "espionage." The proceedings failed to meet even the most basic standards of a fair trial.
Zhino was the first to make the sentence public, and since then she has been her father's voice in the media and before international bodies.
Rezgar's death sentences were later overturned by Iran's Supreme Court. Yet more than 40 months after his arrest, he remains in Urmia central prison, his legal status still unresolved.
On the International Day of the Girl, Zhino's story is a reminder of the price that girls and women in Iran pay for speaking the truth and seeking justice.

Borzou Rezaei, a man from Kermanshah arrested in connection with the January 2026 protests, is being held in Greater Tehran Prison under a death sentence. Published reports provide no details about the evidence supporting the charge against him or how he was able to present his defense in court.
According to HRANA, Branch 23 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced Rezaei to death on a charge of “collaborating with hostile states.” His lawyer was recently notified of the ruling. His trial took place about two months ago.
The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights also reported that Rezaei was tortured in detention before being transferred to Greater Tehran Prison, also known as Fashafouyeh Prison. According to Hengaw, prison officials have also informed him of his death sentence.
The reports reviewed provide no information about whether Rezaei had access to a lawyer during interrogation or whether an appeal has been filed. The report of torture and the lack of clarity surrounding the proceedings raise serious concerns about his right to defend himself and receive a fair trial.
