Alireza Sepahi, who was arrested during the January 2026 protests in Isfahan and sentenced to death in the “Alikhani Square” case, has been moved to solitary confinement in Dastgerd Prison, raising fears that his execution may be imminent.
Iran International, citing an informed source, reported that Sepahi was transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for his execution. Judicial and prison authorities have yet to comment on his condition or the reason for the transfer.
Sepahi was scheduled to be executed in the early hours of July 28 alongside his cousin, Abolfazl Sepahi, and Amirhossein Safari. However, he suffered a cardiac episode while being taken to the execution site and was rushed to Al-Zahra Hospital. After receiving treatment, he was returned to Dastgerd Prison. Abolfazl Sepahi and Amirhossein Safari were executed that day.
The Supreme Court previously upheld the death sentences of 12 defendants in the Alikhani Square case. Five have since been executed, while the remaining seven remain at risk of execution. Given the previous attempt to carry out his sentence, Sepahi’s transfer to solitary confinement has heightened concerns for his life.

According to information received by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC), Alireza Sepahi and other defendants in the “Alikhani Square” case in Isfahan were tortured during interrogations by IRGC Intelligence to extract confessions. Sepahi, who has been sentenced to death on three counts and approximately 16 years in prison, spent two separate periods of 24 and 16 days in solitary confinement. Other defendants, including Ahmadreza Saeidi, were reportedly subjected to electric shocks with stun guns.
According to the same information, officers gained entry to the family home on January 13 by deceiving its occupants. During Sepahi’s arrest, they shot him four times in the legs from the front, despite his being unarmed and approximately 40 officers being present. His 14-year-old sister was also arrested and tortured to obtain statements against her brother. His mother, Somayeh Afshar, was summoned on the promise that her son would be released, but was then arrested herself. She is currently held in Dolatabad Prison in Isfahan. Reports also indicate that the mothers of some defendants were assaulted in front of their children to force them to confess.
The defendants face charges of (Moharebeh) “waging war against God,” (Baghy) “armed rebellion,” and “sowing corruption on Earth.” However, according to the information received, knives found in the home were recorded as weapons, and no footage of the alleged killings has been presented despite the presence of surveillance cameras at the scene. The information further indicates that torture and assaults on defendants’ family members were used to extract forced confessions and build the case against them.
Sepahi previously suffered a heart attack while being transferred for execution and was returned to prison after being hospitalized. According to the latest information, Branch 39 of the Supreme Court initially ordered a stay of execution and subsequently granted a retrial. However, Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court reportedly rejected the retrial request without examining the merits of the case and referred it to the Office for the Enforcement of Sentences. Sepahi remains at risk of execution, while his lawyers continue their efforts to halt the execution and secure a fresh review of his case.

Shahrzad Shahbazi, Alireza Sepahi’s lawyer, warned today, October 4, 2026, that her client was at risk of execution after his family received a call asking them to visit him. “Today he is breathing; perhaps tomorrow he won’t be…” she wrote.
Babak Moradifar, a legal scholar and political activist, also reported on social media that Sepahi had been transferred from the general ward of Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan to solitary confinement and that his family had been told to come for a final visit. His mother, who is serving a five-year prison sentence in the same case, had also been summoned for a final visit with her son, according to Moradifar. He warned that Sepahi was scheduled to be executed tonight.
Sepahi was detained during the January 2026 protests in Isfahan and is a defendant in the case known as “Alikhani Square.” According to information previously received by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC), he and other defendants were tortured to extract confessions. Members of his family were also reportedly detained and tortured to force him to confess.
Sepahi was previously scheduled to be executed at dawn on July 28, but suffered a cardiac emergency while being taken for execution and was transferred to a hospital. He was returned to prison after treatment. His cousin, Abolfazl Sepahi, and Amirhossein Safari were executed that day.
IHRDC previously reported that although Branch 39 of the Supreme Court had granted Sepahi a retrial, Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court rejected his request without examining the merits of the case and sent it for enforcement of the death sentence. Moradifar’s latest post indicates that his lawyer’s efforts to secure a review have failed to halt the execution.

Alireza Sepahi and Alireza Raeisi, two men arrested during the January 2026 protests, were executed at dawn on Monday, October 5, 2026, in Isfahan’s Dastgerd Prison. Mizan, the news agency affiliated with the Islamic Republic’s judiciary, announced that their death sentences had been carried out after being upheld by the Supreme Court. Both were defendants in the “Alikhani Square” case, which concerned events on January 8, 2026. Mizan accused them of involvement in the deaths of four police officers and listed the charges underlying their sentences as including membership in an armed rebel group, (Moharebeh) “waging war against God,” and “corruption on earth.”
The executions were carried out despite numerous reports of torture and forced confessions in the case. According to these reports, Alireza Sepahi was beaten, struck on gunshot wounds to his legs, and forced to witness his mother being tortured. Several defendants also said they were coerced into endorsing prepared statements placing Sepahi at the scene. Reports further indicated that some defendants who retracted their statements in court were subjected to beatings and mock executions to force them to confess again.
Reports concerning Alireza Raeisi indicate that authorities concealed his detention from his family and denied him the right to choose his own lawyer. Raeisi was the cousin of Ramin Raeisi, who was killed during the January protests. Ministry of Intelligence agents arrested him outside Isfahan’s Bagh-e Rezvan Cemetery on January 19, 2026, a day after Ramin’s burial. People close to the family said security agencies refused to acknowledge his detention for several days. Once his whereabouts became known, the family was told he could only have a court-appointed lawyer. His family denied the allegation that he had participated in killing the officers.
Just hours before his execution, on the evening of October 4, Alireza Sepahi and his fiancée, Mahshad Kashani, who was also imprisoned in connection with the January protests, married over the phone from prison. The couple, who had been engaged before their arrests, requested an in-person visit after their marriage ceremony so they could see each other before his execution. Sepahi was executed the following morning.
