Iman Sadeghi, a 20-year-old blogger detained in connection with the January 2026 protests in Kashan, Isfahan Province, faces a prison term of 12 years, six months, and one day on charges related to his media activities and online posts. He was arrested on January 31, 2026, and subsequently transferred to Kashan Prison.

According to information published by Iran International, Sadeghi was sentenced to 12 years, six months, and one day in prison for publishing criminal content against national security, and seven months and 16 days for disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic. Under Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, only the longer of these two prison terms is enforceable. If the ruling becomes final, he would therefore be required to serve 12 years, six months, and one day. Another charge in his case concerns publishing criminal content in the media and press resulting in defamation.

The report provides no details about the content underlying the charges, Sadeghi’s access to a lawyer, or the court proceedings. His harsh prison sentence reflects the Islamic Republic’s established pattern of using national security charges to suppress freedom of expression and punish social media users. Through this practice, the judiciary disregards fair trial safeguards and uses online posts and the expression of opinions as grounds for imposing years of imprisonment.
