Four individuals detained during the January 2026 protests in Tehran have been sentenced to death and full confiscation of their assets by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court. A fifth defendant in the same case has received a lengthy prison sentence.
The four, Bita Hemmati, Mohammadreza Majidi-Asl (her husband), Kourosh Zamani-Nejad, and Behrouz Zamani-Nejad, were arrested along with Amir Hemmati, Bita Hemmati’s brother, during a nighttime raid carried out by security forces. Reports indicate that agents entered their residence without warning and carried out the arrests with violence.
According to a report by Dadban, the four main defendants were sentenced to death on charges of operational cooperation with a hostile state, namely the United States, and opposing groups. The ruling was issued under legislation concerning cooperation with hostile states against national security and interests. In addition, each of them was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of assembly and collusion against national security, along with the confiscation of all their assets as a supplementary punishment.
Amir Hemmati, the fifth defendant in the case, was sentenced to a total of five years and eight months in prison on charges of assembly and collusion against national security and disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic.
According to the verdict, the primary evidence cited against the defendants consists of reports by security agents. While the court listed allegations such as chanting slogans against Islamic Republic, using incendiary materials and bladed weapons, injuring individuals, and damaging public property, it did not clearly specify how these acts were attributed to each defendant individually.
Separately, a report by HRANA indicates that the defendants were subjected to intense pressure during interrogations, raising concerns about the possible use of forced confessions. These concerns have further intensified questions about due process and the fairness of the proceedings.
