Iran’s judiciary announced that Erfan Esfandiari and Golmohammad Mohammadi, two people detained during the January 2026 protests, were executed in Isfahan early on Sunday, July 19. Mohammadi was an Afghan national.
The two men were tried in the case known as the Alikhani Square case. Judicial authorities accused them of involvement in attacks on law enforcement officers and the destruction and burning of public property during the January 8 protests.
A total of 59 people were tried in the case, 12 of whom received death sentences. Reports indicate that the proceedings before Branch 1 of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court, involving Judges Mohammad Barati Darcheh and Mohammad Tavakoli, consisted of only three one-hour hearings. News reports have also alleged that the defendants had limited access to independent legal counsel and were subjected to torture and coerced confessions.
The death sentences of all 12 defendants had previously been referred to the Enforcement of Sentences Office after being upheld by the Supreme Court. Following the executions of Esfandiari and Mohammadi, the 10 remaining defendants continue to face a serious risk of execution.
