Nasrin Sotoudeh, a former political prisoner, lawyer, and human rights defender, was arrested at her residence in Tehran last night.
According to her daughter, Mehraveh Khandan, the arrest took place while Sotoudeh was alone at home. No information has been released regarding the authority responsible for the arrest or the charges against her.
Reports indicate that security forces confiscated her personal electronic devices, including her mobile phone and laptop, during the arrest.
Sotoudeh is among the signatories of a statement issued in January 2026 by 17 Iranian political and civil activists, which expressed support for nationwide protests and called for a peaceful transition from the Islamic Republic through a referendum and the formation of a national government.
Her husband, Reza Khandan, has also been in detention since December 2024. Sotoudeh’s arrest comes after she had publicly emphasized the need to protect civilians in times of war.
