According to a news published by the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners, Alireza Beiranvand, a 25-year-old poet and cultural activist from Izeh, died after being arrested in Tehran.

According to this news report, he was arrested by security forces on May 5, 2026. Official authorities have stated that the cause of death was poisoning, but activists and independent sources, pointing to the lack of transparent information regarding his detention conditions and the arrest process, have cast doubt on this account.

Alireza Beiranvand had previously been arrested during the December 2017-January 2018 protests and the “Woman, Life, Freedom” uprising, and was known among local activists as a dissident poet.

His death comes amid growing attention to a number of cases in recent years involving detainees who died under unclear circumstances, including Baktash Abtin, Sattar Beheshti, and Mahsa Amini, in which questions remain about the circumstances of death and the handling of subsequent investigations.
