Alireza Peighambari, a 26-year-old man arrested during the nationwide protests of January 2026, has been sentenced to death by Branch 23 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court on the charge of “waging war against God” (moharebeh). The sentence was issued while his case remains under review by Branch 9 of the Supreme Court, and a final ruling has not yet been announced.
According to published reports, Peighambari was arrested by security forces on January 9, 2026, during protests in Tehran. He was later released on bail pending legal proceedings, but was re-arrested following court hearings and transferred to Tehran Greater Prison (Fashafouyeh).
The first hearing in his case was held in May 2026, followed by a second hearing in early June. After the second session concluded, security agents took him into custody and transferred him to prison.
A source familiar with the case told the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center (IHRDC) that Peighambari did not play an active role in the protests and was arrested while returning home from work because he happened to be in an area where demonstrations were taking place.
