According to a recent report by Iran Human Rights, conditions at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj have significantly deteriorated in recent days, with inmates facing increased violence by prison officials, shortages of essential goods, and restricted access to medical care.

The report indicates that prisoners in Unit 4 have been subjected to severe beatings using polyethylene pipes, tools typically used for water piping but reportedly repurposed to inflict pain. According to informed sources, the force and intensity of these assaults have been described as even more painful than conventional forms of punishment in prison. The transfer of guards with a known history of abusive behavior to this unit has further heightened concerns about escalating mistreatment.

Meanwhile, conditions in other units are also described as critical. Sources report a sharp rise in food prices, alongside limited access to drinking water, medication, and healthcare services. These hardships, compounded by strict communication restrictions and denial of leave, have placed additional pressure on prisoners.

A large proportion of inmates in Ghezel Hesar are individuals convicted of drug-related offenses, many of whom face the risk of execution. Some prisoners have described themselves as “victims of poverty,” citing unemployment and economic hardship as factors that led to their imprisonment, and have called for their voices to be heard.

At the same time, the report raises concerns about the continued lack of information regarding the condition and whereabouts of several political prisoners held in the facility.
