Leila Abolhasani, a 43-year-old woman and mother of two teenage daughters who was arrested during the January 2026 protests, has been sentenced to death by Branch 5 of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court on the charge of “waging war against God.” She has been held at Dowlatabad Prison in Isfahan for more than seven months. Following an appeal, her case has been referred to the Supreme Court for review.

According to a report by Tavaana, Abolhasani was arrested on January 8, 2026, in Shahin Shahr, Isfahan Province. Reports indicate that she was filming a fire at an Ofogh Kourosh store at the time of her arrest. Judicial authorities, however, have accused her of involvement in setting the store on fire. Her relatives reject this allegation and say she was merely recording the scene while the store was burning.

Abolhasani’s case was heard in late May 2026 by Branch 5 of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Vahid Hemmatnejad. The court sentenced her to death on the charge of “waging war against God.” Details regarding the evidence used to link her to the arson, the proceedings in her case, and the defense presented on her behalf have not been made public.

Following the issuance of the death sentence, an appeal was filed and the case was referred to the Supreme Court. The outcome of the review has not yet been announced. If the death sentence is upheld, Leila Abolhasani will face the risk of execution.
