Mehrdad Mohammadinia and Ashkan Maleki, who were arrested during the January 2026 protests in Tehran, were executed in the early hours of June 1, 2026. News of their executions was first reported by Mizan News Agency, the judiciary's official media outlet.

According to Mizan, the two men had been sentenced to death in connection with a case involving the burning of the Jafari Mosque in Tehran's Gisha neighborhood. They were convicted on charges including "participation in operational actions against national security," cooperation with hostile states, destruction and arson of public property, and creating public disorder. The judiciary claimed that the case was based on the defendants' confessions, CCTV footage, and reports from security agencies.

However, no information has been made public regarding the circumstances under which the confessions were obtained, whether the defendants had access to independent legal counsel, or whether fair trial standards were upheld during the proceedings.

The trial of Mehrdad Mohammadinia and Ashkan Maleki was held in February 2026. In the same case, another defendant, Arman Marefati, was also sentenced to death.

The executions of Mohammadinia and Maleki come amid growing concerns over the increasing use of the death penalty in politically motivated and security-related cases. Human rights groups have reported a rise in the issuance and carrying out of death sentences in recent months and have warned that a number of other individuals detained in connection with the January 2026 protests remain at risk of execution.
