Rasoul Rezaei, a resident of Fariman, has been sentenced to death in an initial ruling issued by Branch 5 of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court.
According to information received by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center from an informed source, Rezaei was arrested at his workplace in Fariman on January 13, 2026, and transferred to the local Ministry of Intelligence detention facility. He was reportedly severely beaten during his arrest and interrogation. He was then held at a police station in Fariman for approximately one week to allow the wounds and bruises on his body to subside before being transferred to prison.
The charges brought against Rezaei reportedly include disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic, attempted intentional murder, consuming alcohol, brandishing a knife, insulting officials and law enforcement officers, collusion to commit crimes against national security, and leading and directing the protests.
He was taken to court on Monday, August 31, 2026, where he received written notification of the death sentence. The ruling is not final and may be appealed.
According to information received by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center from an informed source, earlier reports published by some human rights media outlets and circulated on social media regarding the Supreme Court’s reported decision to uphold Rasoul Rezaei’s death sentence, as well as the date of his arrest, were incorrect.
