Taraneh Rahimi, a 20-year-old prisoner sentenced to death and held at Dolatabad prison in Isfahan, is reportedly in critical condition and has largely lost her ability to walk. Despite this, prison authorities have refused to transfer her to a hospital.
Human rights activist Mehdi Mahmoudian reported on Sunday, September 6, 2026, that a doctor had determined Taraneh urgently needed surgery. However, the head of the prison’s medical unit reportedly opposed her transfer, saying: “If she is going to be executed, she can be executed with a paralyzed leg.”
According to the report, Taraneh has been denied visits, including meetings with her lawyer. Prison authorities have also refused to accept a knee brace and orthopedic ankle support provided by her family. Her twin sister, Romina Rahimi, who has asthma, has reportedly been denied access to her inhaler.
The sisters were arrested in connection with the January 8, 2026 protests in Isfahan. Branch One of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court sentenced Taraneh to death and 11 years in prison, while Romina received a 25-year prison sentence. Reports have also raised allegations of torture and coerced confessions.
Their case is part of the 16-defendant case known as the “Isfahan Shohada Square case.” In addition to Taraneh, Navid Elyasi, Abolfazl Dadgostar, Mehdi Mansouri, Ahmadreza Saeedi, Mehrdad Boueri, Mohammad-Mehdi Asadi, Armin Gholami, Parsa Jafari, and Mehdi Jafari were sentenced to death and imprisonment. Six other defendants received lengthy prison sentences.
