Independent media are now confirming that the incident outside the US base wasn't a national emergency.
The police statement virtually admits it's all been a terrible mistake. Going forward, the public is encouraged to report any signs of "small scale criminal activity", because you never know....
The #FairfordFive have been released, without charge. To cover the authorities' blushes they are on bail under (no doubt indefinite) investigation. So either these lads were pinching diesel, or fly-tippers or catspaws in a hoax. Neither explanation puts the government in a good light. They will have to find better reasons to keep ramping up war fever.
Since no one else will take national security seriously the Workers Party takes it upon itself to call for an independent public enquiry into the massive failures of intelligence (in every sense) involved in the Fairford fiasco.
It is no minor matter to alarm the whole country unnecessarily. It is not okay to turf frantic local residents out of their homes. It is not responsible statesmanship to hint without evidence at terrorism by Iran and Russia. It is not acceptable to cause the President of the United States to look like an even bigger fool than he usually does.
Other fools in the British government used the pretext of the "terror" incident to call for higher spending on intelligence and security. An enquiry needs to consider whether the security agencies do not have too much funding already, and whether their behaviour needs to be curbed rather than amplified, bearing in mind earlier egregious cases of misuse of counter-terrorism powers, including the detention of the Leader of the Workers Party, George Galloway, at Gatwick in September 2025.
The enquiry needs to examine in particular the role in the fiasco of the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmoud, who must take responsibility for creating a hostile policing culture.

HERE'S WHAT THE WORLD WAS TOLD YESTERDAY: Suspected Iran-linked terrorists were caught with vans filled with explosives near a US airbase in the UK. US president Donald Trump said his intelligence people had been watching the men for a “long time” because they “were looking to do big damage”.
This morning, what do we learn? The story above is all WRONG.
- It has now been revealed that “no explosive material had been found” in the vehicles, police said.
- The vans contained diesel, the value of which has soared because of unnecessary conflicts, such as the US-Israel attack on Iran.
- The vehicles were branded “Fuel 2You”, suggesting they were openly transporting fuel.
- Also, “All five men were British Nationals”.
- Further, no tip-off came from US intelligence but from a local farmer in her 50s who called the police after seeing men with white vans.
- Photos turned out to have been creatively spun out of one blurred original by an OpenAI program.
- Most notably, all the men were released on bail, indicating that they were not considered dangerous.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE
What a difference a day makes. It’s worth recalling what yesterday’s headlines actually said.
“Counter-terror police investigate Iran link over suspected bomb plot at RAF base used by US,” the Guardian said. “Five men arrested on terrorism charges after explosives found near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire”.
The photos with added AI-generated faces were shared on social media by several groups, including the British Army Veterans Group, and spread quickly, viewed at least 1.6 million times.
It’s certainly valid to report that men apparently acting suspiciously were found in part of rural Britain near an airbase, RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. That’s no excuse to report that they had vans of explosives to blow up an airbase and point the finger at Iran.

THE REAL STORY
As people with a little healthy skepticism know, the actual truth (as opposed to what the headlines say) can usually be found buried deep inside the text.
And so it is with this story.
The very last paragraph of the latest report on this tale in the Guardian says that the UK’s Iranian embassy said the reports of this being an Iranian operation were false, and pointed to the real illegality in the conflict:
"The circulation of such fabricated speculations, particularly in the aftermath of the criminal acts of aggression committed by the United States and the Israeli regime against the Iranian people, will serve no purpose other than to fuel Iranophobia propaganda in the UK."
The irony, of course, is that diesel thefts have soared worldwide as the doubling of prices have led to literally millions of people being unable to run their factories and vehicles.
A global fuel crisis was triggered by the US-Israel attack on Iran on February 28—which the UN has agreed is an ongoing war crime.
And can we name one of the bases the US is using for its operations?
Yes. RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, UK.

On September 23, 2009, Muammar Gaddafi walked into the UN General Assembly in New York for his first — and ultimately his last — appearance at the UN podium.
He spoke for approximately 1 hour and 36 minutes, delivering one of the most extraordinary speeches in the history of the General Assembly.
He was speaking not only for Libya, but also on behalf of the African Union and the African people. Gaddafi's central target was the UN Security Council and the veto power of its five permanent members. He argued that the UN Charter's principle of sovereign equality was fundamentally contradicted by a system in which five countries could veto decisions affecting the rest of the world.
He questioned why the countries that created the UN should retain privileges that allow them to determine the fate of nations that were not even represented when the organization was founded.
He pointed to the Charter's prohibition on aggression and interference in the affairs of sovereign states and contrasted those principles with what he described as decades of wars, interventions and sanctions by the US and other veto members.
He attacked the Security Council as a system of “security feudalism,” arguing that it did not provide genuine security to the world but allowed major powers to impose sanctions and military force according to their own interests.
He rejected the idea that Security Council resolutions should automatically be obeyed when, in his view, the Council itself violated the principles of the Charter.
Then he turned to Africa.
Gaddafi argued that Africa deserved a permanent seat on the Security Council because of the continent's historical suffering and exclusion from global decision-making.
He went further, calling for compensation for Africa over the wealth and resources extracted during colonial rule — estimating the historical debt at approximately $77.7 trillion — and argued that colonization itself should be criminalized.
He also criticized the location of the UN headquarters in New York, arguing that the annual General Assembly should rotate between different regions of the world rather than remaining permanently in the United States.
Then he trained his guns on the international response to Palestine, criticizing Israel over settlements, Palestinian prisoners, refugees and the absence of a Palestinian state.
He advocated a system in which Muslims, Christians and Jews could live with equal rights in a single state.
At one point, Gaddafi held up a copy of the UN Charter and dramatically tore it apart. The symbolism was unmistakable.
He was arguing that the international system claimed to be built on sovereign equality while maintaining a hierarchy in which a handful of powerful states possessed extraordinary privileges.
On that day, on that podium, Gaddafi made countless enemies.

Then, just two years later, in 2011, Libya conveniently descended into chaos. The West funded and backed an uprising against Gaddafi, while the very Security Council he had condemned authorized military action against Libya. NATO then launched a massive bombing campaign. NATO warplanes struck Libyan targets from the air for months. Eventually, NATO aircraft struck Gaddafi's convoy as he was fleeing Sirte. Gaddafi was captured alive by Western-backed rebel fighters. What followed was horrific. He was beaten, tortured and ultimately killed. His son Mu'tassim Gaddafi was also captured and killed.
The UN justified the intervention as an effort to "protect civilians". But Libya was left devastated — to date. Libyans have continued to live with the consequences of that "intervention" for more than a decade.

The meeting Netanyahu held in the UAE brought together delegations from eleven sides: the UAE, Jordan, Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Haftar's regime in Libya, Morocco, Bahrain, the United States, and Oman.
This was no ordinary diplomatic gathering. It was a summit specifically requested by Netanyahu at a moment when his political survival is increasingly tied to the continuation of regional crisis.
With elections approaching in Tel Aviv, the stakes could not be higher. A prolonged state of emergency could provide the political cover to delay the reckoning awaiting him in court and keep his grip on power intact.
Netanyahu appears willing to gamble with an entire region to protect his throne.
Palestinian blood has already paid a devastating price. Lebanese blood has too. And now, the danger is that nero, the war criminal, clinging to power will keep setting the region on fire rather than face the consequences waiting for him.
And as for the participants at the table, many had arrived to power through coercion, regime change, or decades of alignment with imperial power; their presence is hardly surprising.
But if their peoples themselves blindly follow the same script, then truly, على الدنيا السلام, there is little left to say about the fate of the world. Maybe we, as humans, truly need to replaced on this planet.
