Post-Soviet Russia, Made in the U.S.A. | Telesur/Empire Files - 2017

The increased aggression towards #Russia from #US politicians and media is made more clear when taking into account the real history of the post-Soviet period. The hidden story of Boris #Yeltsin’s presidency explains how deeply the US government, along with Western capitalist institutions, cheered, shaped and exploited the country after the fall of the Soviet Union, paving the way for the political system they all condemn today.

To uncover just how much the #USEmpire has interfered in Russia’s political evolution, Abby Martin interviews Mark Ames, an American journalist who spent a decade reporting from Yeltsin’ and Putin’s Russia and witnessed the country’s transformation from an American “colony” to it’s “number one threat.”

The Motherland Remembers

On September 21, 1993, Boris Yeltsin signed the unconstitutional decree No. 1400 "On the phased constitutional reform in the Russian Federation."

This decree dissolved the Congress of People's Deputies and the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Federation, thereby grossly violating the country's Constitution. According to the Constitutional Court's conclusion, the president's decree was recognised as an unconstitutional act, providing grounds for #Yeltsin's removal from office.

Following this decree, troops were introduced into Moscow, the nationwide elected bodies of Soviet power were crushed, and the defenders of the Supreme Soviet in Moscow were shot on October 3-4, 1993. A state coup d'état akin to Pinochet's fascist coup in Chile was carried out in our country.

According to official data, the victims numbered 147, but according to some sources, more than 1000 people.

Destruction of the Soviet Union

What Yeltsin eradicated, was a just, fair social system with well-functioning social lifts, where everyone had their rights secured.

What he brought instead was the most predatory form of capitalism, banditism, mafia (Yeltsin and those close to him were referred to as «The Family»). All that cost tens of millions of people their lives, all the common wealth of the country, that everyone worked toward creating, was plundered.

The civil war in #Ukraine is in part an echo of Yeltsin’s actions, when the state that kept nationalism in check, was destroyed.

After the unconstitutional coup of 1993, #Yeltsin delivered Russia to the external control of the #US — #Russia became a colony of the USA for a very long decade.

The only good thing that he did in his miserable drunken life, was to recommend Putin to Clinton and to ensure that #Clinton would OK Putin’s election — yes, Russia was that much under external control!

The snipers of Black October

"According to a verbatim report cited by Dmitry Rogozin, former Russian ambassador to NATO: “They were shot from the back. I saw it with my own eyes. “Fire was coming from the roof of the American Embassy, from the bell tower near Hotel Mir. All our soldiers were shot from the back. I do not know who the shooters were, but I could make a guess.”"

According to Rogozin, “#Yeltsin received the go-ahead from the West to dissolve the Parliament. Just think it over – Parliament was shot at by tanks! And Western democracies did not say a word about it. Why? Because it was in October 1993 when the privatisation of Russia’s natural resources was under consideration. Along with the final privatisation of the Russian rubble.”

Indeed, under the influence of the #IMF, #GoldmanSachs and other American advisors, Yeltsin wanted to throw the Russian economy under the bus. Even as Russian incomes halved, he wanted to privatise everything ..

The pendulum of violence in Russia started swinging 30 years ago, in October 1993

On September 21, 1993, Boris Yeltsin signed Decree No. 1400 “On stage-by stage constitutional reform in the Russian Federation.” The decree provided for the dissolution of the Supreme Council and the termination of the powers of the Congress of People's Deputies.

The same day, Chairman of the Supreme Council Ruslan Khasbulatov called #Yeltsin's actions a coup d’état and said that parliament was not going to resign. At an emergency meeting of people's deputies on September 22, a resolution was adopted to terminate Yeltsin’s powers and appoint Vice President Alexander Rutskoy as acting head of state.

Rutskoy failed in his attempt to reassign the heads of law enforcement agencies. Defence Minister Pavel Grachev and Internal Affairs Minister Viktor Yerin remained loyal to Yeltsin.

Were the events of August of 1991 a coup d’état? | Beorn's Beehive

This was perhaps the most striking and dramatic event of the turbulent perestroika period. Top leaders of the state removed Mikhail #Gorbachev, the current president of the #USSR, from power and declared a state of emergency. Armoured personnel carriers on #Moscow’s pavements and barricades around the residence of the President and government of the #RSFSR, the White House, became symbols of the confrontation that took to the streets.

However, a few days later, the political fiesta ended with the unexpectedly rapid surrender of the Emergency Committee and crowded rallies, where supporters of the President of the RSFSR Boris #Yeltsin, who initially called the actions of the Emergency Committee a “right-wing reactionary unconstitutional coup”, noisily celebrated the victory. Three days of “great upheavals”, which effectively became a fleeting epilogue to the entire history of the Soviet Union.

Facilitating the plunder of state properties was a group of American economic advisors led by Harvard economist Jeffrey Sachs. #Yeltsin implemented Sachs’s program of shock therapy—freeing prices and selling off state enterprises—with no regard to the social consequences

The economic disaster of the 1990s caused by shock therapy had dire societal repercussions. The economic collapse led to mass poverty, reduced life expectancy, and a massive decline in living standards. For the majority of Russians, shock therapy meant economic ruin. Some studies have since shown that by the mid-1990s, approximately 40% of the population was living below the poverty line.

#PostSovietRussia
#Yeltsin’s policies in post-Soviet Russia between 1991 and 2000 had a transformative and often destabilising impact on the country’s political, economic, and social landscape. His attempts to dismantle the Soviet system and introduce market reforms were radical, abrupt, and deeply contested. While these policies succeeded in establishing a framework for capitalist transformation and electoral politics, they also unleashed economic hardship, social fragmentation, and institutional instability. Yeltsin’s presidency was marked by a volatile combination of reformist ambition and political authoritarianism, as he bypassed representative institutions to push through controversial measures.
