Paradigm shift in Palestine, by Thierry Meyssan โ€“

When it was created, Hamas was financed by the United Kingdom(#UK). It was supported by the Israeli secret services to weaken Yasser Arafatโ€™s #Fatah. Israel then fought it and assassinated its religious leader, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. Then, once again, Israel used Hamas to eliminate the leaders of the Marxist Palestinian Resistance.

Hamas fighters accompanied by Mossad agents and
#AlQaeda jihadists attacked the Palestinian #Yarmouk camp at the start of the war against #Syria [1]. But today, once again, Hamas is fighting its erstwhile ally, #Israel.

As President Mahmoud
#Abbasโ€™s health weakens, Fatah is divided into three military factions:
- that of Fathi Abou al-Ardate, the national security chief
- Mohammad Abdel Hamid Issa (alias "Lino"), commander of the Kifah al-Moussallah (armed struggle). It follows in the footsteps of Mohamed Dallan, the former head of Palestinian intelligence who assassinated Yasser
#Arafat. Today, it is supported by the United Arab Emirates.
- that of Mounir Maqdah, former military chief of
Fatah, who is closer to Hamas, #Qatar, #Turkey and #Iran.

Last month, clashes pitted these three factions against those of
#Hamas Islamists, as well as Jund el-Cham and al-Chabab al-Moslem, two jihadist groups that fought alongside #NATO and #Israel against the Syrian Arab Republic. Violent fighting took place at the Aรฏn el-Hรฉlouรฉ camp (Sidon, South Lebanon). At the time, I interpreted them in the light of those at Nahr el-Bared (North #Lebanon) in 2007, before realizing that they were linked to the agony of Mahmoud Abbas

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Turning Point: Gaza Blockade

On 26 January 2006, a significant shift in the balance of power began.

The surprise triumph of Hamas in the Palestinian legislative elections shattered four decades of Fatah's rule, split the West Bank and Gaza between the groups and caused the indefinite blockade of Gaza.

In this episode of MEEโ€™s history explainer series Turning Point, we take a look at how this moment led to Israel's implementation of a land, air, and naval blockade on the Gaza Strip. A siege confining 2.2 million Palestinians in the world's largest "open-air prison".

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ The Battle of Al Karameh  ู…ุนุฑูƒุฉ ุงู„ูƒุฑุงู…ุฉ | 1968 | Palquest

The battle of Al Karameh took place on 21 March 1968, in and around the small Jordanian town of al-Karama , in the Jordan Valley north of the Dead Sea . The battle involved invading Israeli forces and a combination of Palestinian guerrilla fighters (fedayeen) and forces from the Jordanian army. It was the first major Israeli invasion into Arab territory since the end of the 1967 War .

Although the Israeli army succeeding in destroying the fedayeen base at al-Karama, it suffered relatively heavy losses in the process, and the news of vastly outnumbered and outgunned fedayeen standing and fighting instead of retreating led to a massive upsurge in publicity and support for the Palestinian resistance movement, and Fatah in particular, launching it into the leadership of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) the following year.

The battle thus became a key moment in the development of the Palestinian resistance movement. At the same time, it set the stage for a confrontation between Palestinian guerrilla organizations and the Jordanian state, which would come to a head in the events of September 1970.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Hamas, Fatah and the history of Palestine liberation | Azzam Tamimi | The Big Picture S3E02

The history of Palestinian liberation movements is paved with setbacks, betrayals and bitter rivalries.

What began as an attempt to unify the resistance against Israeli occupation has over time been undermined by regional and global political interests, ideological differences and disagreements over the justification, and use, of guerilla tactics.

Today the question of who represents Palestinian interests is hotly contested, with Hamas and Fatah vying for control, and a wave of dissatisfied young factions on the rise in Gaza and the West Bank.

British-Palestinian academic and political activist Dr Azzam Tamimi.

In the light of the ongoing violence in Gaza and Israel, and the devastating toll on civilian life, Dr Tamimi explains how these movements began, and why another Palestinian uprising is inevitable

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ Black September Organisation - 1/2

In addition to sowing civil war and the disintegration of Lebanon, the 1970 Jordanian-Palestinian war led to the creation of the Palestinian #BlackSeptember movement. The BSO was created in 1971, as a small cell or #commando faction that split from the PLO, specifically the Fatah #faction. Recruits from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (#PFLP), as-Saโ€™iqa and other groups also joined.

Initially, most BSO  members were #Fatah dissidents who had been close to Abu Ali Iyad, the commander of Fatah forces in northern #Jordan. He continued to fight the Jordanian army after the withdrawal of the #PLO leadership. He was killed, allegedly by execution, by Jordanian forces on 23 July 1971. According to them, the Jordanian Prime Minister at the time, #WasfiTal, was personally responsible for his torture and death.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ The Cairo Agreement, Explained

In the late โ€™60s, especially after Israel won the Arab-Israeli (6-Day) War [#TheWarInJune] in 1967, a strong presence of Palestinian guerillas began to grow in #Lebanon, and the frequency of their operations against Israel from within Lebanese territories increased as well.

On the evening of December 28th, 1968, the Israeli military commenced โ€œ#OperationGift,โ€ a #commando operation on #Beirut Airport that resulted in the destruction of 13 passenger planes and a total loss of $43.8 million.

The Israeli repeated retaliations partly aimed to provoke a response in the Lebanese against the militant Palestinian presence in their country.

However, at the time, a significant portion of the Lebanese population was in support of that presence, for reasons that include the prevailing sentiment in the region against the Israeli occupation of #Palestine and the sectarian rift that had begun to manifest between #Muslims and #Christians.

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine

In the wake of the 1967 Six Day War and the occupation of the West Bank by Israel, Palestinian Christian George Habash, established the PFLP, a resistance movement that combined Arab nationalism with Marxist-Leninist ideology.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the group gained notoriety for a series of armed attacks and plane #highjacks, most notably with the capture of an Air France plane in 1967. Among the most prominent members of the group is Leila Khaled, who became an iconic symbol for Palestinian resistance and female power after she highjacked a plane headed from Rome to Athens in 1969.

In the 1970s, after #Fatah โ€“ the leading secular Palestinian political party founded in 1959 by #YasserArafat and others, the #PFLP has consistently been the second-largest of the groups forming the #PLO, the umbrella organisation of the Palestinian national movement.
