The 5G Dragnet

Telecom companies are currently scrambling to implement fifth-generation cellular network technology. But the world of 5G is a world where all objects are wired and constantly communicating data to one another. The dark truth is that the development of 5G networks and the various networked products that they will give rise to in the global smart city infrastructure, represent the greatest threat to freedom in the history of humanity.

Privacy leaks in smart devices: Extracting data from used smart home devices

Remember the good old fun sport, where people bought random hard drives from ebay and did forensics on them?
Did you know you can do the same thing with used #IoT #devices too? Most end-users have no idea what kind of #information their devices are storing and how to securely clean their devices (if that even is possible). Lets explore together what the risks are and how we can extract that data.

Microsoft buys IoT security firm CyberX

Microsoft is acquiring IoT security vendor CyberX for an undisclosed amount, the two companies announced on June 22. Microsoft plans to integrate CyberX's products and technologies with its existing set of IoT security products, officials said.

CyberX allows customers to see their existing IoT assets so they can manage and better secure those devices, officials said. CyberX's technology will allow users to see digital maps of thousands of devices across a factory floor or within a building, for example, so they can monitor their security state and connectivity, officials said.

Siri, Alexa Targeted as EU Probes ‘Internet of Things’

Voice assistants such as Apple Inc.’s Siri and Amazon.com Inc.’s Alexa are at the center of a sweeping European Union antitrust inquiry into how Silicon Valley uses data to gain a tight grip on growing markets.

EU watchdogs already see signs that tech giants might be restricting access to data or making products that don’t work well with those made by other companies, the European Commission said in a statement on Thursday announcing the probe into the so-called internet of things.

“Once big companies use their power, they can very, very quickly push markets beyond the tipping point where competition turns into monopoly,” EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager told reporters in Brussels. “If we don’t act in good time, there is a serious risk that this will happen again with the internet of things,” she said.

AIoT: When Artificial Intelligence Meets the Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a technology helping us to reimagine daily life, but artificial intelligence (AI) is the real driving force behind the IoT’s full potential.

From its most basic applications of tracking our fitness levels, to its wide-reaching potential across industries and urban planning, the growing partnership between AI and the IoT means that a smarter future could occur sooner than we think.

This infographic by TSMC highlights the breakthrough technologies and trends making that shift possible, and how we’re continuing to push the boundaries.

When coffee makers are demanding a ransom, you know IoT is screwed

With the name Smarter, you might expect a network-connected kitchen appliance maker to be, well, smarter than companies selling conventional appliances. But in the case of the Smarter’s Internet-of-things coffee maker, you’d be wrong.

This IoT Mesh Network Watches You As You Shop - Without Cameras

We built an
IoT mesh network to help understand shopper behavior, without using cameras.

Online retailers know a lot about how their customers are navigating their virtual stores. Offline retailers are not so lucky.

Together with consumer behavior experts B:Clarity and a multinational home appliance brand we built a system to help understand customer movement and behavior.

The system consists of wireless sensors that are installed in electronics stores. A few hundred sensors in each store.

💡 There are two types of sensors:

👉🏼
Vibration sensors. That trigger when someone is trying out a product.

👉🏼 Light sensors. Trigger when someone is standing in front of a product.

With these sensors, we can see what items are most popular, how it correlates to sales data – and how to take action to improve sales.

But without collecting any personally identifiable information.

UK.gov wants mobile makers to declare death dates for their new devices from launch

IoT security plan suddenly thrusts into the mainstream

Phone, tablet, and IoT gadget makers will have to state when they'll stop providing security updates for new devices entering the market, the UK's Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) vowed this morning.

Today's pledge would see existing plans for internet-connected tat extended to smartphones and tablets, which is a large step for a scheme originally put together for landfill Internet-of-Things devices such as webcams.

Digital Infrastructure Minister Matt Warman said in a canned statement: "Our phones and smart devices can be a gold mine for hackers looking to steal data, yet a great number still run older software with holes in their security systems."

The £70m Secure by Design plan has been telegraphed by the DCMS for years, though today's extension to everyday smartphones is notable.

On top of this, smart device makers will also be banned from publishing default admin passwords for their wares. Such admin passwords are a standard method for digital crims to break into a device or the network to which it is connected.

A government-sponsored study from University College London two years ago, highlighted today by DCMS, said typical IoT devices come with no crime prevention advice, which is presumably the sort of finding that UK.gov enjoys seeing public money poured into.

The erosion of personal ownership

Everything from your fridge to your tractor can change without your permission.

Several months ago, as we began mentally preparing to move apartments, my girlfriend nodded toward two gray linen boxes that had long sat untouched at the base of our TV stand. “What’s in those?” she asked. I told her they held my DVDs. “When have you ever watched those?” she asked, rhetorical and correct. She wanted to know if, in the name of optimizing space in our next home, we could dump both the boxes and their contents.

It was a reasonable ask. I couldn’t remember the last time I had even thought about my DVDs; if quizzed on the boxes’ inventories, I might have struggled for a passing grade. Whatever was in there could surely be streamed via some subscription service we already held or else replaced with a digital purchase, and in either case could be flexibly enjoyed on more devices than just the living room TV connected to my Xbox One.

Still, something more than nostalgia made me balk. Streaming requires continued payments to rent access to a library prone to changes beyond my control. Digital purchases come with byzantine restrictions and often rely on that platform’s continued existence and a sustained, quality internet connection. Relying even more heavily on these models felt like a further concession to the powers that already wield such outsize influence over our 21st-century lives, not only through streaming and digital goods but increasingly through the internet-embedded everything around us. There was something comfortingly self-sufficient about the idea that, in theory, the only thing stopping me from watching Pee-wee’s Big Adventure for free whenever I damn well pleased was an act of God, or at least a power outage. And there was something uncomfortable about sacrificing that — about letting yet another aspect of life slip fully into the intangible digital ether.

Meet Toka, the Most Dangerous Israeli Spyware Firm You've Never Heard Of – Mint Press - 2021 - Whitney Webb

Toka was launched in 2018 with the explicit purpose of selling a “tailored ecosystem of cyber capabilities and software products for governmental, law enforcement, and security agencies.” According to a profile of the company published in Forbes shortly after it launched, Toka advertised itself as “a one-stop hacking shop for governments that require extra capability to fight terrorists and other threats to national security in the digital domain.”

Toka launched with plans to “provide spy tools for whatever device its clients require,” including not only smartphones but a
“special focus on the so-called Internet of Things (IoT).” Per the company, this includes devices like Amazon Echo, Google Nest-connected home products, as well as connected fridges, thermostats and alarms. Exploits in these products discovered by Toka.
