Several FBI documents were released by the New York Times Saturday highlighting an effort by the FBI in 2020-2021 to secure and deploy Pegasus spyware.

#Pegasus #spyware, developed by the #NSO Group, is a zero-click hacking tool that can invade a target’s mobile phone and extract messages, photos, contacts, messages and video recordings.

The FBI insisted that their acquisition of the software was solely for “research and development” or “to be able to figure out how bad guys could use it.”

However, documents released by the New York Times, following a Freedom of Information lawsuit, highlight an effort by the FBI to deploy the spyware in criminal investigations. In particular, documents 93 and 94 show that the Criminal Investigations Department had prepared briefs regarding the “assessment and evaluation of NSO tool for potential use in criminal investigations.”“

A technical analysis of Intellexa's PREDATOR spyware - 2023

Spyware suppliers take great care to make the final payloads difficult to detect, obtain, analyze and protect against by creating deployment sequences that often require little or no user interaction. The delivery mechanism is usually an exploit chain that can start a zero-click exploit, like #FORCEDENTRY, which is produced by Israeli spyware firm #NSO Group, or with a link that the victim is tricked into clicking (i.e., a “one-click” exploit), like the one created by the surveillance company Cytrox to deploy their own spyware known as “PREDATOR.” (Note: #Cytrox is owned by Intellexa, which sells the #PREDATOR spyware.)

Who Paid for a Mysterious Spy Tool? The F.B.I., an F.B.I. Inquiry Found.
"When The New York Times reported in April that a contractor had purchased and deployed a spying tool made by NSO, the contentious Israeli hacking firm, for use by the U.S. government, White House officials said they were unaware of the contract and put the F.B.I. in charge of figuring out who might have been using the technology.
After an investigation, the F.B.I. uncovered at least part of the answer: It was the F.B.I."
