Concerns Over Bill to Force Telecom Providers to Share Data With Authorities

Telecom providers are concerned about a bill that will temporarily force them to collect more data about people's travel behavior and share that anonymously with the Dutch authorities. The idea is that the data will be shared with public health institute RIVM to help track and fight the spread of the coronavirus, but telecom providers are worried that it will eventually also end up with intelligence and investigative services, sources from inside the telecom industry told NOS.

Did a Chinese Hack Kill Canada’s Greatest Tech Company?

Nortel was once a world leader in wireless technology. Then came a hack and the rise of Huawei.

The documents began arriving in China at 8:48 a.m. on a Saturday in April 2004. There were close to 800 of them: PowerPoint presentations from customer meetings, an analysis of a recent sales loss, design details for an American communications network. Others were technical, including source code that represented some of the most sensitive information owned by Nortel Networks Corp., then one of the world’s largest companies.

How US restrictions drove Deutsche Telekom and Huawei closer together

Internal documents illustrate leading European operator’s special relationship with Huawei.

Global telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom strengthened its strategic partnership with Huawei last year despite growing defiance toward the dominant Chinese 5G vendor, documents reviewed by POLITICO show.

The internal company records describe how Deutsche Telekom and Huawei agreed on a deal in mid-2019 that said the Chinese supplier would take measures to avoid supply chain disruption caused by U.S. measures, as well as cover the costs of potential damages and delays.

The deal was struck just weeks before the U.S. administration imposed restrictions on businesses dealing with the Chinese firm in May 2019 β€” a milestone for Washington's efforts to push back against Huawei's dominance on 5G equipment.

Cyber attack downs Telstra network, affecting thousands of internet users

A cyber attack has brought down the internet address book that runs Telstra's network, resulting in thousands of people in Sydney and Melbourne reporting outages on Sunday morning.

The telco tweeted that it was looking into an issue impacting home internet connections, including those on the NBN. There were also reports from users that phones were affected too.

"We've identified the issue and are working on it," the telco later said. "Some of our Domain Name Servers (DNS) used to route your traffic online are experiencing a cyber attack, known as a Denial of Service (DoS). Your info isn't at risk. We're doing all we can to get you back online."

Mass Telstra internet outages weren’t caused by cyber attack, telco now says

Thousands of Telstra internet customers in Sydney and Melbourne were hit by a mass service outage today and the telco initially blamed a massive cyber attack

But it has now bizarrely backed down on the claim.

On Sunday morning, the company confirmed home internet connections, both broadband and NBN, were down - predominantly in Sydney and Melbourne.

It blamed a a Denial of Service attack, saying Domain Name Servers were impacted.
