Zoom confirms Chinese Government asked it to suspend activists accounts over Tiananmen Square meetings

U.S. video conferencing company Zoom issued a statement on Thursday acknowledging that the Chinese government requested that it suspend the accounts of several U.S.- and Hong Kong-based Chinese activists for holding events commemorating the anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.

The big picture: Zoom claims that it only took action because the Chinese government informed the company that "this activity is illegal in China" and that meeting metadata showed "a significant number of mainland China participants." Zoom said it does not have the ability to block participants from a certain country, and so it made the decision to end some of the meetings and suspend the host accounts.

Chinese users saw Zoom as a window through the 'Great Firewall'

Zoom Video Communications (ZM.O) has gained a following in China in recent months from users ranging from underground churches to feminists who saw it as a rare way to connect with the world beyond the reach of state censors.
...
While most Chinese users turn to Zoom for conference calls and casual chats, some have seized the chance to discuss potentially sensitive topics, from patriotism to feminism.

Some state-approved and underground churches use Zoom to hold services.

Zoom is not the only software, but we feel it’s rather more accessible,” said Xiao Meili, a feminist activist who held a Zoom talk in April on the #MeToo movement.

“Before, some friends recommended Tencent conference ... but everyone would feel like you shouldn’t say anything that’s slightly sensitive,” she said, referring to a tool offered by the Chinese tech giant behind WeChat.

Lawsuit: Zoom Lied About Security Measures, End-to-End Encryption

The lawsuit claims that Zoom never had end-to-end encryption, despite it telling customers that it did.

Zoom is facing another lawsuit alleging that the video communications company has deceived consumers by making false claims about its privacy measures.

FOX Business reports that the most recent lawsuit was filed by Consumer Watchdog on behalf of Washington, D.C., consumers. In a Monday filing, Consumer Watchdog claimed that Zoom has made false representations about the platform’s security, such as its being equipped with “end-to-end encryption.”

Zoom's videoconferencing platform experiences widespread outage

The outage is causing chaos as millions of children and teachers attempt to start the school year online.

Zoom's videoconferencing service is apparently having a widespread outage in the US, causing chaos as millions of children and teachers attempt to start the school year online.

Down Detector shows a spike in Zoom users reporting issues with logging in to the video conferencing service early on August 24, mainly affecting users in the eastern US and in the UK. There are currently several thousand outage or issue reports on Down Detector.

Zoom Shared US User Data With Beijing

Former
Zoom executive Jin Xinjiang worked with Chinese authorities to provide data on users outside of China. Court documents say this allowed Zoom to keep market access in China.

Although Zoom is based in the United States, its software is developed in China.

When Zoom usage exploded during the pandemic, China tightened control. It ordered Zoom employees to shut down what Beijing calls “illegal” meetings and accounts within one minute. If it took more than one minute, it was rated “security non-compliant.”

Victims include activists commemorating Tiananmen Square Massacre victims and Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang, China.

Zoom says it’s cooperating with federal investigators and has launched an internal investigation. Zoom fired Jin and placed other employees on administrative leave.

The CCP demands all communications companies censor speech it deems unacceptable. Anyone who fails to comply gets blocked from the massive Chinese market. In September last year, the CCP blocked Zoom. It allegedly told Zoom that if it wanted to get back into the Chinese market, it had to monitor user communications, censor unacceptable topics, give data on around 1 million people in the United States, and hand over special access to Zoom’s systems. Zoom got back into China’s market in November of last year.

FaceTime is coming to Android and Windows via the web

Zoom is the worst of all. Heil facetime!

Android and Windows users will finally be able to join FaceTime calls. During its WWDC keynote, Apple announced that FaceTime is going to be available on the web so users can call in from Android devices and Windows PCs. The video calling service was previously only available on iOS and Mac devices.

Apple is turning FaceTime into a bit more of a Zoom-like video calling service with this update. FaceTime is also going to allow you to grab a link to a scheduled call so that you can share it with people in advance and join in at the right time. A major new feature SharePlay will let a group of people watch or listen to the same thing at once

⚠️ IMPORTANT NOTICE ⚠️ Do you use Zoom video conferencing software? If so, and you value your privacy… STOP! 🛑 Zoom's terms of service (Section 10.2) now require you to allow AI to train on ALL your data—audio, facial recognition, private conversations—unconditionally…
This post isn't right, #Zoom may have edited their terms recently. Now it says:
