Linux not Windows: Why Munich is shifting back from Microsoft to open source – again

Munich's flip-flop back to open source is the latest sign of Germany's political sea change over proprietary software.

In a notable U-turn for the city, newly elected politicians in Munich have decided that its administration needs to use open-source software, instead of proprietary products like Microsoft Office.

"Where it is technologically and financially possible, the city will put emphasis on open standards and free open-source licensed software," a new coalition agreement negotiated between the recently elected Green party and the Social Democrats says.

The agreement was finalized Sunday and the parties will be in power until 2026. "We will adhere to the principle of 'public money, public code'. That means that as long as there is no confidential or personal data involved, the source code of the city's software will also be made public," the agreement states.

Facebook’s Long History of Open Source Investments Deepens with Platinum-level Linux Foundation Membership

From its efforts to reshape computing through open source to its aggressive push to increase internet connectivity around the world, Facebook is a leader in open innovation. Perhaps more important today than ever, Facebook’s focus on democratizing access to technology enhances opportunity and scale for individuals and businesses alike. That’s why we’re so excited to announce the company is joining the Linux Foundation at the highest level.

Facebook’s sponsorship of open innovation through the Linux Foundation will help support the largest shared technology investment in history with an estimated $16B in development costs of the world’s 100+ leading open source projects and supports those project communities through governance, events and education. The company is also already the lead contributor of many Linux Foundation-hosted projects, such as Presto, GraphQL, Osquery and ONNX. It has been an active participant in Linux kernel development, employing key developers and maintainers across major kernel subsystems.

Threema Goes Open Source, Welcomes New Partner

Strengthened Through Partnership

After an intense startup phase, Threema lays the foundation for continuity, further growth, and an acceleration of the product development thanks to the entry of the German-Swiss investment company Afinum Management AG.

Afinum fully shares our values regarding security and privacy protection. The additional resources gained through this partnership enable Threema to grow beyond the German-speaking part of Europe, and we can use our energy for visionary new ideas and projects. That said, Threema’s founders – Manuel Kasper, Silvan Engeler, and Martin Blatter, all software developers – will continue to lead the company and still retain a significant ownership interest.

Open Source and Multi Device

Security and privacy protection are deeply ingrained in Threema’s DNA, which is why our code gets reviewed externally on a regular basis. Within the next months, the Threema apps will become fully open source, supporting reproducible builds. This is to say that anyone will be able to independently review Threema’s security and verify that the published source code corresponds to the downloaded app.

In the future, it will be possible to use multiple devices in parallel thanks to an innovative multi-device solution. In contrast to other approaches, no trace of personal data will be left behind on a server. Thanks to this technology, Threema can be used on a PC without a smartphone.

In conclusion, Threema will become even more trustworthy and even more convenient to use.

Fair Code vs Open Source, Which Wins The Future?

Fair code is a new software development model which aims to replace the long-ruling open source model. Fair code authors argue that open source software lack a critical point in terms of commercial usage of the software, and hence, introduced their initiative to fix it.

What is Fair Code?

When developers release their software as open source, they are also giving a by-definition right to every company in the world to commercially use their software without having to obtain a license or share some profits with them. And this caused some problems in the open source world few years ago. For example, Amazon took the MongoDB source code (An open source database system), changed its name and then provided it as a SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) on its AWS platform, and then charged people money to use it. MongoDB developers were angered since they literally got nothing back from Amazon although they are the original creators of 100% of the code.

LineageOS adopts SeedVault as its open source backup solution

For those not familiar with SeedVault, it is an open-source backup app that uses the same internal APIs as adb backup. The application doesn’t need root access, but it must be compiled with the operating system. The backup location is user-configurable, with options ranging from a USB flash drive to a remote self-hosted cloud alternative such as NextCloud. This makes SeedVault a particularly viable option for users who doesn’t want to store their personal data to Google’s proprietary cloud-based storage.

Warning not all apps can be backed up this way
Some apps declare they cannot be backed up in their manifests so adb backup, therefore seedvault, skips them

Threema publishes source code and lowers prices

The messenger service has disclosed its complete source code and cut its app prices by half.

After the service had already revealed its cryptographic processes to the public for some time, the next step now follows. The entire source code of the apps can now be viewed. It is subject to the third version of the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPLv3). Using reproducible builds, specialists can check at any time whether it matches the source code of the sales apps. Due to Apple's app store policies, this is currently only possible via the Android versions.

Astian Translate: Open Source Translations in Nine Languages

Astian's new translation service competes against proprietary services from Google, Microsoft and Amazon. It is based on the Python software Argos Translate.

With Translate, Astian releases a new translation service that appears as free software. At launch, the program can handle nine languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic and Chinese. Automatic input recognition is still experimental.

Users can try out the service on libretranslate.com, which is operated by Astian, but the software can also be deployed on a separate server. The corresponding API can be found on GitHub, including instructions for setup and configuration. However, the Astian server is intended for testing purposes only.

Most proprietary toasters are malware

Help me understand this (really).

Why should software be expected to have source code available? Don't get me wrong - I love SQLite and OpenSSL, but it has nothing to do with having access to the source code.

My toaster did not come with specs and design documents so I can change it. Neither did my power drill or car.

The music I listen do doesn't have synthesizer settings available and raw source before mixing. Movies I watch don't come with scripts, budgets, contacts, location licenses, etc.

What is it specifically about software that makes people think the source must be available? Where does this expectation come from?

TrackerControl

TrackerControl allows users to monitor and control the widespread, ongoing, hidden data collection in mobile apps about user behaviour (‘tracking’).

To detect tracking, TrackerControl combines the power of the Disconnect blocklist, used by Firefox, and our in-house blocklist is used, created from analysing ~2 000 000 apps! Additionally, TrackerControl supports custom blocklists.

💡 This approach

👉🏼
reveals the companies behind tracking,

👉🏼 allows to block tracking selectively, and

👉🏼 exposes the purposes of tracking, such as analytics or advertising.

The app also aims to educate about your rights under Data Protection Law, such the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Under the hood, TrackerControl uses Android’s VPN functionality, to analyse apps’ network communications locally on the Android device. This is accomplished through a local VPN server, to enable network traffic analysis by TrackerControl.

💡 No root is required, other VPNs or Private DNS are not supported. No external VPN server is used, to keep your data safe! TrackerControl even protects you against DNS cloaking, a popular technique to hide trackers in websites and apps.

TrackerControl will always be free and open source, being a research project.

Castopod Host

Castopod Host is an open-source server made for podcasters who want engage and interact with their audience. Please note that Castopod Host is still under heavy development: it may not be 100% stable and some features are still being developed.

We are a team of entrepreneurs and developers who spent the last ten years developing media content solutions.

We have always been advocates for the open source community, but we coud not find open source solutions for podcasts that suited our needs, so we decided to start The Podlibre Iniative.

The past two decades of organic growth were driven by original audio content producers.
Major digital players and audio content industry are now investing on Podcasts.
Yet, compared to the standards in Social Media and Search Engines, Podcasts - technology, user experience - have not evolved much for the past 20 years.

It is time for all players - Podcasters, Radio Networks, Journalists, Writers and all Voice lovers - to power up podcasts!
