Sync Contacts & Calendar without Gapps

🔄 Offline Backup:
The fastest, easiest and most privacy-friendly way is to just backup your vcf and restore it on each wipe. Not much for convenience, but we wouldn't be here if that bothered us, would we? :)
--Go to contacts app
--For Backup, Options > Import/Export > 'Export to .vcf file'
--The .vcf file will be saved in the root of your storage. Keep it secure. Or I'll come for it.
--For Restore, Options > Import/Export > 'Import from .vcf file'
To retieve your contacts directly from your Google account in a vcf file:
--Go to https://contacts.google.com/ and login
--Use sidebar > Export > select 'Export as VCard' > Export

🔄 Google's sync adapters:
Google uses some proprietary APKs that sync your Contacts and Calendar, namely:
--com.google.android.backuptransport
--com.google.android.syncadapters.contacts
--com.google.android.syncadapters.calendar
You can get them from several sources:
--The latest OpenGapps 'Pico' package for your device
--Several installers like MinMicrog Standard or NanoDroid
These APKs are dependant on your android version, so make sure to get the correct ones
Just install, give them perms, and enable your account sync from system settings. They should start doing their job

🔄 With CardDAV:
You should be able to sync contacts using the open-source CardDAV client DAVdroid (available on F-Droid or Play)
First of all, go to https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps
With your account and enable the setting
When logging in with DAVDroid, Use "Login with URL and user name"
--Base URL:
https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/your_gmail_id@gmail.com/events
--User name:
your_gmail_id@gmail.com
--Password: Your Google account password
This will sync your contacts and calendar with the default settings. Explaining DAVDroid configurations might take another separate post, or a few.
The URL might change over time.

🔄 Other alternatives:
You could setup some locally hosted alternatives to sync your contacts like Nextcloud or Syncthing. In this case, good luck, and you can always get help in the group if you get stuck.

What’s in your browser (backup)?

It’s not every day that I wake up thinking about how people back up their web browsers. Mostly this is because I don’t feel the need to back up any aspect of my browsing. Some people lovingly maintain huge libraries of bookmarks and use fancy online services to organize them. I pay for one of those because I aspire to be that kind of person, but I’ve never been organized enough to use it.

In fact, the only thing I want from my browser is for my history to please go away, preferably as quickly as possible. My browser is a part of my brain, and backing my thoughts up to a cloud provider is the most invasive thing I can imagine. Plus, I’m constantly imagining how I’ll explain specific searches to the FBI.

All of these thoughts are apropos a Twitter thread I saw last night from a Chrome developer, which purports to explain why “browser sync” features (across several platforms) don’t provide end-to-end encryption by default.

Ouisync

Store, sync, and share files across devices anywhere.
Secure, open source, peer-to-peer file-sharing.

https://ouisync.net

https://github.com/equalitie/ouisync-app/releases

- Easily share content with your audiences
Need to share news, event documents, videos or educational material to your audiences without relying on centralized platforms that are easily blocked? With Ouisync, you can quickly upload media and share Read-only access to content via QR codes, shortlinks, or other messaging platforms. Ouisync is 100% free and open source, and will never share or sell your data to third parties.

- Quickly share files with a friend
Share a Ouisync repository using Write permissions to allow multiple users to add or edit files within a repository, even in conditions of limited connectivity. Keep data in sync between your personal devices, collaborate on team projects, and create group photo albums. All data in Ouisync is end-to-end encrypted for your peace of mind.

- Securely store sensitive documents
Want to securely back up your data on other devices and make it inaccessible to anyone else? Share your Ouisync repositories in Blind mode. Your friend offers you their spare computer for storage of your data? Let your friends be your cloud! It takes just a couple of taps in Ouisync to securely store your data in Blind mode and you never again have to worry about losing your phone - your data is safely stored for whenever you need it.

- Secure
Data (including metadata such as file name, size or location) is encrypted both in transit and at rest, and can be shared as read/write, read-only, or blind.

- Resilient
Ouisync users are able to share files despite conditions of limited or no internet connectivity, when the centralised servers most apps rely upon may not be reachable.

- You're in control
Easily create encrypted repositories for your data and then distribute the link to friends, audiences, or between devices for effective, decentralized publication and/or backup storage.
