WHO chatbot on Facebook ignores Taiwan

World Health Organization Facebook messenger bot ignores all questions relating to Taiwan

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Netizens on Sunday (July 19) began noticing that the World Health Organization's (WHO) automated chatbot on Facebook is ignoring all questions related to Taiwan.

Claire Chu, a Taiwanese American senior analyst at RWR Advisory Group, told Taiwan News she had noticed on Sunday that a number of Taiwanese friends had mentioned that the automated responses in the WHO's Facebook messenger box were exclusively ignoring any queries that included the keyword "Taiwan" in them. When visiting the messenger tool for WHO's official Facebook page, after choosing English as the preferred language, she was met with the following greeting: "Please type the name of any country (e.g. "India") to get its latest official case numbers and sign-up to stats alerts..."

Chinese Hackers Have Pillaged Taiwan's Semiconductor Industry

A campaign called Operation Skeleton Key has stolen source code, software development kits, chip designs, and more.

Taiwan has faced existential conflict with China for its entire existence and has been targeted by China's state-sponsored hackers for years. But an investigation by one Taiwanese security firm has revealed just how deeply a single group of Chinese hackers was able to penetrate an industry at the core of the Taiwanese economy, pillaging practically its entire semiconductor industry.

Taiwan to block streaming services of Tencent and Baidu's iQiyi

Crackdown is latest setback for Chinese internet companies seeking growth abroad

HONG KONG/TAIPEI -- Taiwan authorities are closing a regulatory loophole to block Tencent Holdings and Baidu from offering video streaming services on the self-governing island, the latest sign that rising geopolitical tensions are weighing on the global ambitions of Chinese internet giants.

Chinese players are already banned from offering video streaming in Taiwan, but Tencent and Baidu's popular iQiyi platform have managed to avoid those restrictions by partnering with local companies. The Ministry of Economic Affairs, however, announced on Tuesday night that it is tightening its regulations to prevent local businesses from distributing video content produced by mainland Chinese companies, effective Sept. 3.

Taiwan tells Taobao e-commerce site to re-register or leave island

TAIPEI: Taiwan gave e-commerce site Taobao Taiwan six months to re-register as Chinese-backed rather than foreign or leave the island, in the government's latest shot against Chinese firms.

Taiwan has stepped up oversight of Chinese investments and the operations of Chinese tech firms on the island and last week said it planned to stop local sales of Chinese Internet television streaming services, though it did not plan to block them.

Taiwan treats investment from foreign countries differently to that from China, with far more stringent rules for Chinese firms.
