β€‹β€‹πŸ“Ί Lockdown: a Push from Audio to Video

We're still in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, and it's difficult to fully grasp all its effects on how we're living our lives. We're still getting used to many changes we never expected to experience.

One takeaway from the current situation and the accompanying lockdown has been that, apparently, when we have to stay at home, we tend to move from listening to watching.

The big picture: A big chunk of audio consumption happens during daily commute where it's not possible β€” nor advisable β€” to look at screens. Of course, the lockdown has lifted this limitation and freed up the bandwidth we need to consume more videos by killing off the daily commute.

More details: According to Channel Factory, a global technology platform and official #YouTube partner, in April, consumers were heading to YouTube for "uplifting" content, and that usually meant music videos β€” or #TikTok and prank videos!
These downward revisions are happening where, for the last several years, digital audio consumption was experiencing steady growth.

On a personal level: My digital audio consumption habits have changed, but not precisely in this way. I have less time to listen to podcasts because that has been part of my daily commute routine.
However, since I have more time for my writing β€” and exercising β€” I do listen to more music on the background because I don't have to pay active attention to it.
I'm not the biggest fan of music video watching, so I can't comment on that part of the research.

πŸ“Œ Story Pins: a Pinteresting take on the Story Format

Okay, based on today's poll, not many of you use #Pinterest, but I'd like to post a short article about Story Pins on Pinterest for a couple of reasons - and I think you'll find it useful:

1. for those of you who use Pinterest, this can help you reach A LOT more users.

2. for those of you who don't use Pinterest, well, you might wanna reconsider if you do anything that could use more exposure or online traffic.

Pinterest is pretty fun to use. Unlike what many think, it's less of social platform and more of a search engine; and if you know the difference, you'll be surprised how powerful it is.

🦁 Brave Together: Video Calls with Privacy & No Limits

Brave has been my default desktop browser for over a year now. Switching to Brave wasn't the easiest decision back then, but it was the right one β€” just because my work process depended on more than a few Chrome extensions. Now, after almost a year with Brave, I don't even have Chrome installed on my laptop.

I had quite a few reasons that caused me to switch. Still, the main ones were my interest in crypto and Brave's BAT (Basic Attention Token) β€” which did relate to my PhD topic, its speed (mainly because of its built-in ad-blocker, and its focus on privacy.

And recently, Brave has announced Brave Together β€” Brave's unlimited and privacy-focused videoconferencing tool (based on Jitsi's opensource software).

I wrote a short article about Brave Together, just because it was fascinating to me. You can read it here: https://prs.pctvix.co/2XfO8P6

and you can download Brave here.

PS. This post's image shows what Brave has done for me.

πŸš€ Elon Musk Almost Crying Then
and definitely not crying right now.

By now, you probably have heard or even watched the launch of SpaceX Dragon Crew Demo-2. This is the first crewed orbital spaceflight launched from the United States since the final Space Shuttle mission in 2011.

SpaceX was founded in 2002 by Elon Musk to reduce space transportation costs to enable the colonisation of Mars. Since then, SpaceX has developed several launch vehicles and the Dragon spacecraft.

In 2004, in an interview with CNN, Elon Musk explained how he could work with NASA and his vision for the future of space travel.

This post's video is Elon Musk's interview with Scott Pelley on 60 Minutes. How he felt in the video versus how he feels today is what we need to keep moving forward β€” even when it's not easy.

I wish Neil Armstrong & Gene Cernan were alive to see Elon's SpaceX Demo-2 mission and comment on it.

β€‹β€‹πŸ€– reCAPTCHA
the pain-in-the-ass contribution to culture

If you've been online long enough, you probably have come across a reCAPTCHA. Remember those distorted words you had to figure out to prove to a computer that you're not one of them? Yea, those.

CAPTCHA is an acronym for "completely automated public Turing test to tell computers and humans apart." Even if you knew what it stands for, there's a good chance you didn't know what you were actually doing when typing those annoyingly malformed words...

Every time you typed a distorted pain-in-the-ass captcha, you were contributing to digitising a book β€” or magazine or some publication! I know, it's 🀯 β€” and it ranged from The New York Times' archive of over 100 years to all the books in Google's library.

I learned that listening to Luis von Ahn explaining creating reCAPTCHA & Duolingo. It's a fantastic story β€” at least, it made me feel less bad about wasting my time on captcha!

β€‹β€‹πŸ¦ Twitter's Record-breaking Week

Back in 2016, Twitter switched categories, from "Social Networking" to "News" on the App Store and Google Play, hoping to boost its visibility. It did take it to the top of the chart in more than one occasion.

Fours years later, #Twitter is having a record-breaking week, according to two well-respected app store intelligence companies, Apptopia and SensorTower. Although their numbers are not precisely the same, they both show the same overall picture: flocks of new and returning Twitter users β€” almost 1 million new users in a day!

And why that is?
The world is amid civil unrest and protests for the death of #GeorgeFloyd and racial inequality. At the same time, #coronavirus has disrupted the life around the globe in its first wave and threatening with a second one. Twitter itself is in the news for standing up to Donald #Trump for sharing misleading information and/or promoting violence. While many people are outside protesting, many are stuck at home from the coronavirus threat. These all cause the need for immediacy in the news to be more than ever. And Twitter is serving that need.

Since the beginning of online social networking β€” web 2.0 phenomena before that β€” many of the "social" platforms have evolved to become more. Twitter has become a social news platform feeding the need for immediacy in the news; #Pinterest has become a social/visual search engine, etc.

These changes in the platforms, which many of us use daily, need to be reflected in the way we use them β€” personally or professionally β€” the same way it was considered in Twitter's change of categories.

🀳 Too Much Branded Influencer Content on Social Media

Influencer marketing and branded content on #SocialMedia is quickly catching up to traditional advertising β€” but how do consumers feel about this development?

According to new data from Kantar, a third of consumers like branded content less than ads. The number is almost 60% in @perspectiveix Telegram community, according to the poll in the previous post [after 169 votes].

The amount of these branded and promotional content is another attitude determining factor. Kantar data shows 42% of the respondents say that they see too much branded content on social media, while 22% claimed that they don't notice it.

❓ How do you feel about that? Do you think you're seeing too much of them? Or you don't even notice them? Or they don't bother you?

β€‹β€‹πŸ“Ί Netflix Sees Unprecedented Growth Amid Pandemic

While no one in their right mind would wish for a global health emergency/economic crisis, it’s hard to make a list of companies that might profit from the current situation and not have #Netflix on that list. A global crisis that forces people to stay home for weeks? Movie theaters, bars, restaurants, and gyms shuttered? No live sports on TV? What else are people supposed to do but cuddle up and watch Tiger King?

Netflix’s latest quarterly results seem to confirm that notion, as the streaming giant added more paid subscribers over the past six months than ever before in its history. Nearly 16 million people signed up for the service in the first quarter alone, with another 10 million subscribers added by the end of June. That brings Netflix's global paid memberships to 193 million, up 26 million since the beginning of 2020. To add some perspective, Netflix added just 12 million subscribers in the first half of 2019 and less than 28 million in the entire year.
