برنامه ریشه‌های داد روایتی است از مسیر پرپیچ و خمی که حقوق بشر پیموده و از پرسشی که هنوز بی‌پاسخ مانده است. در این برنامه به معرفی فیلسوفان و متفکرانی که پایه‌گذار مفاهیم حقوق بشری بودند پرداخته می‌شود.
کوروش کبیر، بنیان‌گذار امپراتوری هخامنشی، با فتح بابل در سال ۵۳۹ پیش از میلاد و صدور استوانه‌ای که امروزه به منشور کوروش شناخته می‌شود، گامی مهم در شکل‌گیری مفاهیم اولیه حقوق و آزادی‌های انسانی در جهان باستان برداشت. برخی از مفاهیم این استوانه، مانند احترام به باورها و آیین‌های مختلف، با اصولی که بعدها در اعلامیه جهانی حقوق بشر مطرح شد، همخوانی‌هایی دارد. شیوه حکمرانی کوروش نه‌ تنها بر ایران، بلکه بر اندیشه سیاسی در سرزمینهای دیگر، از جمله یونان باستان و بعدها ایالات متحده آمریکا، تأثیر گذاشت.

he Roots of Justice introduces the influential thinkers who pioneered the framework of human rights.
Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Achaemenid Empire, took an important step toward the development of early concepts of human rights and freedoms in the ancient world by conquering Babylon in 539 BCE and issuing the cylinder now known as the Cyrus Cylinder. Some of the concepts expressed in the cylinder, such as respect for different beliefs and religious practices, share similarities with principles that were later articulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Cyrus’ approach to governance influenced not only Iran but also political thought in other lands, including ancient Greece and, later, the United States.
