This month, we revisit protests and crackdowns in Iran in recent years, examining recurring patterns of repression and cases that remain unresolved years later.

Eight years ago, in December 2017 and January 2018, protests that began in Mashhad spread across Iran, with demonstrators openly calling for an end to the Islamic Republic.

Security forces responded with violence. IHRDC documented the deaths of at least 41 people, including protesters killed by live ammunition and detainees who died under suspicious circumstances in custody. Hundreds were arrested, and many were subjected to torture, ill-treatment, and unfair trials.

No security official has been held accountable. Families seeking justice faced pressure, while authorities denied responsibility for deaths in custody.

We revisit the December 2017–January 2018 protests because the patterns of repression and impunity they exposed would later reappear in subsequent waves of protest.

Tens of thousands of civilians were killed across Iran during the January 8–9 protests. The deaths of at least 230 children and adolescents were reported by the Coordinating Council of Iranian Teachers’ Trade Associations, although the actual number is believed to be significantly higher. Many were killed by gunfire or blows from riot-control weapons, while others died under suspicious circumstances in custody.

Students also accounted for a significant share of those arrested. The Deputy Chair of the Parliamentary Education Commission publicly acknowledged that one-third of those detained were students. Children were among those arbitrarily detained, with some held alongside adults or incommunicado in undisclosed facilities.

Amir Hossein Hatami and Saleh Mohammadi were executed at age 18 on charges related to the protests.

Authorities have released no disaggregated figures on children killed. Some deaths were attributed to “terrorist agents” or “rioters,” while families of victims were intimidated into silence.

Iran is a party to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Documenting these cases is a first step toward accountability.

Yousef Ahmadi, a political prisoner from Baneh, Kurdistan Province, remains at risk of execution despite the commutation of one of his two death sentences. His death sentence on charges of (Baghy) “armed rebellion” remains in force, and his lawyers have submitted a third request for a retrial to the Supreme Court.

According to Kurdpa, citing an informed source, Branch 1 of the Kurdistan Province Criminal Court commuted Ahmadi’s death sentence in a separate case to 10 years in prison and payment of financial compensation on September 3, 2026. However, his death sentence for “armed rebellion,” issued by the Sanandaj Revolutionary Court, was upheld twice by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court between 2023 and 2025. The source said his lawyers were informed of those decisions verbally after following up on the case.

Ahmadi has been in custody since late April 2020 and is currently held in Sanandaj Central Prison. In September 2023, the Sanandaj Revolutionary Court also sentenced his three co-defendants, all from Baneh, on charges of “aiding and abetting armed rebellion.” Mohammad Karimi received 25 years in prison, Abdolbaset Karimi received 20 years, and Mohammad Feyzi received 20 years.

Kurdpa also reported that all four prisoners were denied access to counsel, family visits, and contact with their families during interrogation, and were subjected to physical torture to extract forced confessions. None has been granted provisional release since their arrest.

Mehdi Jafari, also known as “Mehdi Khosravi,” who was detained in connection with the January 2026 protests in Isfahan, has been sentenced to death by a court of first instance. He is a defendant in the case known as “Isfahan’s Shohada Square,” which has been the subject of reports documenting violations of the defendants’ right to a defense.

According to the Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners in Iran, Branch 1 of the Isfahan Revolutionary Court sentenced Jafari and nine other defendants in the case to death. The committee warned that Jafari is at risk of execution and expressed concern about his fate and the conduct of the proceedings.

Published human rights reports indicate that the trial was held inside Dastgerd Prison before Judges Morteza Barati and Mohammadreza Tavakoli. Defense lawyers were denied access to the case files and sufficient time to review them. One defendant, Ahmadreza Saeedi, also told the court that the interrogating judicial official had tortured him with an electric shock device.

The Islamic Republic’s judiciary has prosecuted 16 people in the “Isfahan’s Shohada Square” case on charges including (Moharebeh) “waging war against God through carrying bladed weapons,” destruction of public property, assembly and collusion, and disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic. The death sentences and prison terms were handed down amid reports of torture and violations of the defendants’ right to a defense. Jafari, who is held in Isfahan’s Dastgerd Prison, was also sentenced to 11 years in prison.

The Taliban have barred girls in Afghanistan from continuing their education beyond the sixth grade. Yet many girls have found alternative ways to learn through online education and technology.

In Herat, Code to Inspire moved its programming classes online and provided laptops and internet packages to around 100 students.

In 2024, the SOLA—School of Leadership, Afghanistan, launched a remote-learning program that allows girls to access daily lessons in Dari, Pashto, and English through a smartphone and messaging platform. By 2025, the program had reached more than 25,000 learners.

Girls themselves have also played a role in creating educational opportunities. Zhala, a young Afghan woman, helped establish an online university where, according to a 2025 report, more than 4,000 women and girls were studying free of charge, with around 150 volunteers supporting the initiative.

The Taliban’s sweeping restrictions have effectively denied girls access to education beyond the sixth grade. But efforts to continue learning persist.
