A note by Arash Sadeghi :

“If war were to bring freedom, the Middle East would be the freest place in the world. Now that the people of this land—having faced the killing of their dearest children by the regime in November 2019—stand on the brink of an all-encompassing war, why should we not speak of the calamities of war? An all-encompassing war that could be extensively protracted, with destructive effects lasting for generations.

Since war, by its very nature, can awaken and employ the darkest evils, and as history testifies, the immediate consequence of any war is the loss of countless innocent lives; for this reason, war must be viewed through the lens of human rights. Through our deeply pained historical intuition, we have all realized that the ambition of war has never been able to nourish the ideals of freedom, equality, and human rights. War, in its first step, nullifies the agency of the people. In the absence of “the people” as the greatest vehicle of “politics,” speaking of freedom, equality, and human rights lacks meaning.

This is why we must speak of the miseries of war without hesitation, even though the frantic enthusiasm of some, aided by media tricks, presents a caricatured and less-than-horrifying image of war to a desperate and suffering people.

If war were to bring freedom, the Middle East would be the freest place in the world.

From this point, we must set aside one misunderstanding: Today, our issue is not “pacifism.” The issue is not defending peace as a moral ideal or a dream. The matter is much simpler and yet more fundamental:

We do not want #war.

This statement is neither an ideological manifesto nor a romantic stance! It is a defense of the most obvious human right: the right to not want death.

The right to life is the prerequisite for any political change. Any future that begins from the heart of an imposed death has already lost a part of its humanity.”
