Sasha Latypova: In the first few weeks after the announcement that there was some kind of new virus in China, the recommendations were the same as for a severe seasonal flu: wash your hands, stay home if you are sick, don't wear masks because they are not useful.
But in mid-March 2020, in all countries practically simultaneously, all these normal public health practices were abandoned.
In the US, the National Security Council was given the task of responding to Covid 19, which is scandalous in itself.
They invoked laws relating to attacks on a global scale with chemical, radiological, biological and nuclear weapons. These laws were applied in secret and were basically intended only for short-term severe local threats/attacks in which it was necessary to act quickly.
In such an emergency situation, the US PREP act allows the use of medical countermeasures (= vaccines) and exempts from liability those associated with the production and application of these countermeasures. The PREP act was recently extended until 2029, and interestingly, even Kennedy still hasn't repealed it even though he has the authority to do so.

ALGOL (ALGOrithmic Language) was designed in the late 1950s with memory safety principles that were decades ahead of their time. By integrating ALGOL68 into the Linux kernel, we're not just improving security - we're making a statement about the cyclical nature of computer science innovation and drawing attention to the neglected history of the field.
ALGOL68 is the 3rd major specification of ALGOL and an ambitious redesign of the language. It has been regarded as one of the most influencial programming languages of all times, notable for being especially efficient, elegant, and correct. Security follows naturally.
In 2022, the Linux kernel got support for a 2nd high-level language. But Rust insists upon itself. By 2026, Linux will finally get memory safety done right.
Memory safety mechanisms are not recent innovations but established techniques dating back to 1961 - when they were successfully implemented in ALGOL. These mechanisms address persistent failure modes in systems programming. Contrary to common assertions in systems programming communities, these approaches have historical precedent and proven effectiveness. The safety features in ALGOL-FOR-LINUX build upon this technical lineage rather than representing a novel experimental approach.

The medics had been missing for five days after israeli forces advanced into western Rafah. Their fate remained unknown until rescue teams, coordinated with the Red Cross, entered the area. They discovered that israeli occupation troops had executed the missing medics and buried them near the barracks. The soldiers also destroyed all Palestinian Red Crescent and Civil Defence ambulances at the site.
The Palestinian Red Crescent had reported the medics missing for days. On Monday, the organisation lost contact with four ambulances during a rescue mission in Rafah’s Tel Sultan neighbourhood. israeli forces attacked the vehicles and later surrounded the area, cutting off all communication amidst reports of mass field executions in the area.
Since the genocide began in October 2023, israel has killed 19 Palestinian medics while they carried out humanitarian work. The ongoing assault on Gaza, supported by the US and Europe, has led to over 164,000 Palestinian casualties, including thousands of missing persons. Most victims are women and children.

I really wish this was an April fools joke, but Roblox just announced a new partnership with Google, which would enable advertisers to purchase “Immersive Ads” in the popular Roblox video game.
Roblox is a browser based game where players build & explore worlds with lego-like characters. Its estimated that Roblox has close to 80M daily active users. 58% of the users are assumed to be under 16 years old.
Now Gen Z-ers will be presented with “Immersive Ads” on in-game Billboards. They will also be able to pay for in-game purchases by watching these ads.
Worse yet, these ads will be associated with in-game rewards.
Roblox is partnering with some of the biggest consumer research firms to measure effectiveness of ads and brand impact. Some of the biggest names in the space will participate including DoubleVerify, Cint, Kantar, and Nieslen - who will quiz kids on how they felt about the ads.
If other gaming platforms implement this (and why wouldn’t they?), it would mean the death for online gaming and the invasion of surveillance infrastructure in these virtual worlds.

Turkey has begun taking steps to take over the T4 Air Base in central Syria, the Middle East Eye (#MEE) reported on April 1, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The #T4, also known as #Tiyas, is Syria’s largest air base. It is located in the eastern #Homs countryside, right in the heart of the country.
The United Kingdom-based news website said that plans were underway to reconstruct and expand the air base, with the deployment of Turkish-made Hisar-type air defense systems and advanced surveillance and combat drones.
