Half the Nation Gone: Ukraine’s Demographic Freefall

Ukraine’s ongoing population decline has accelerated dramatically due to the war. From 52 million in 1991, the population by 2025 has nearly halved. Official estimates put about 28–29 million people in Ukraine-controlled areas, but alternative methods like mobile phone and electricity data suggest possibly 33–34 million. Analysts, however, believe the true number of permanent residents may be below 24 million.

This uncertainty stems from wartime disruptions, refugee exodus, internal displacement, and falling birth rates. #Ukraine’s last #census was in 2001, forcing reliance on unconventional methods. The population is now older, more female, and significantly reduced, posing severe economic, military, and national stability challenges.

#War prevents traditional counting via censuses or registries, as millions have relocated, complicating government tracking. Basic #population questions for major cities remain unanswered.

The UN and all aid organizations operating in Gaza have announced that they would not cooperate with an Israeli-U.S. plan to establish a new mechanism for aid delivery to Gaza people, saying it's unacceptable.

Here are some reasons for their rejection:
-The plan contravenes fundamental humanitarian principles
-Designed to reinforce control over life-sustaining items as a pressure tactic
-Dangerous as it drives civilians into militarized zones to collect rations
-Replaces the existing UN aid distribution system with one controlled by Israel
-Would be channeled through an internationally governed foundation
-Only one aid package is allowed per family for seven days
-Would'nt enable aid delivery for less mobile and most vulnerable people

British media reports say that speculation is mounting that the eight men, including seven Iranian nationals, who were arrested in the UK over the weekend had been “hours away” from carrying out an attack on a synagogue. There is no confirmation of the reports.

According to The Telegraph, “the target may have been a synagogue or another target linked to the Jewish community.”

⭕️ The Hind Rajab Foundation announced on 3 May, what would have been Hind Rajab’s 7th birthday, that it has identified the Israeli soldier responsible for her killing.

Following over a year of investigation, the foundation said it filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Lt. Colonel Beni Aharon of the Israeli army.
