“Billionaires shouldn’t exist, billionaires they’ve got to go”
A video statement by former Amazon worker and labor organizer Chris Smalls was projected onto Jeff Bezos’s Manhattan penthouse on May 3, ahead of the Met Gala, as activists staged a series of high-profile protests against the billionaire.
The action, organized by protest group Everyone Hates Elon, featured testimony from Chris Smalls criticizing working conditions at Amazon, as well as the company’s involvement in Project Nimbus and Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
“Amazon invested $7.2 billion into Project Nimbus, which is used to surveil and target innocent Palestinians” Smalls said. “Billionaires shouldn’t exist. Billionaires, they gotta go.”
The projection formed part of a wider campaign targeting Bezos, who, alongside his wife Lauren Sanchez, served as an honorary cochair and major sponsor of this year’s Met Gala

Preventing major power war, containing nuclear risk, keeping trade open enough to avoid systemic fracture, governing artificial intelligence, protecting basic rights, and slowing climate and nature breakdown all require wider frameworks than ad hoc clubs can provide. The disappearance of a single hegemon does not make shared stewardship less necessary. It makes it more so."
