🇵🇸 Francesca Albanese: Western media is living in an alternate reality | The Listening Post

In recent weeks, there has been an alarmingly small number of official voices calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

One exception has been Francesca Albanese - the United Nation’s Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian territories. She joins us for an interview on #terminology, #context and the blindspots of mainstream media.

🇵🇸We have failed to prevent genocide.”

#UN special rapporteur #FrancescaAlbanese called Israel’s continued bombardment of Gaza an “acceleration of #genocide”, in an interview with Channel 4 News on Tuesday.

She also urged for the discussion on the events in #Gaza to be held in the framework of international law, rather than based on what Israel is saying as she emphasised how two of its leaders are “indicted for war crimes and crimes against humanity” by the International Criminal Court (#ICC).

Israel killed more than 400 Palestinians, including over 100 children, in one of the bloodiest bombardments of the Gaza Strip early on Tuesday, unilaterally ending its ceasefire with Hamas. Since Tuesday, more than 710 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Our 'Madleen' was on a mission of urgency after a year of set backs, carrying baby formula, food, medicine, and basic humanity. Then came unidentified vessels, speedboats, quadcopters, and finally, Israeli soldiers. Francesca Albanese recounts what happened in real-time as she spoke to the crew live. She reminds us that 'Madleen' was a UK-flagged boat seized in international waters. Israel's interception is an act of piracy. Abduction is illegal, as is their siege, genocide, occupation and countless other war crimes across Palestine. So what makes a small, aid boat so scary for the Israeli occupation? According to Francesca Albanese: it is our humanity. It is everyone's defiance. It is our collective power to break the siege.

🇵🇸Who fears the truth? The lawfare campaign to silence Francesca Albanese – Middle East Monitor

"#FrancescaAlbanese has become one of the most polarising figures in contemporary diplomacy, not because she commands armies or signs treaties, but because she insists on describing what she sees. Since assuming her mandate as United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories in 2023, the Italian jurist has delivered reports that cut through diplomatic euphemism with the precision of a scalpel.

In her October 2024 report to the General Assembly, pointedly titled Genocide as Colonial Erasure, she concluded there were ‘reasonable grounds’ to believe that Israel’s conduct in Gaza met the legal threshold of genocide and formed part of a ‘century-long project of eliminatory settler-colonialism’. Few phrases in international law carry such moral weight. Fewer still are uttered so plainly in the marble halls of New York and Geneva."

🇵🇸 The United States has reinstated sanctions on Francesca Albanese, the United Nations' special rapporteur on Palestine, after a federal appeals court temporarily paused a lower-court ruling that had blocked the measures on free-speech grounds.

The decision was confirmed in a notice posted to the US Treasury's website on Wednesday.

The Donald Trump administration sanctioned Albanese in July last year, shortly after her scathing report in which she named over 60 companies, including major US technology firms like Google, Amazon and Microsoft, which she said were involved in "the transformation of Israel's economy of occupation to an economy of genocide".

The report called for the International Criminal Court (#ICC) and national judicial systems to pursue investigations and prosecutions of corporate executives and companies
