Hundreds of astronomers warn Elon Musk's Starlink satellites could limit scientific discoveries

SpaceX plans to launch thousands of satellites as part of its Starlink space internet project

Hundreds of astronomers have warned that satellite constellations like Elon Musk‘s Starlink network could prove “extremely impactful” to astronomy and scientific progress.

A report by the Satellite Constellations 1 (Satcon1) workshop found that that constellations of bright satellites will fundamentally change ground-based optical and infrared astronomy and could impact the appearance of the night’s sky for stargazers around the world.

The research brought together more than 250 astronomers, satellite operators and dark-sky advocates to better understand the astronomical impact of large satellite constellations.

SpaceX’s Starlink satellites could make US Army navigation hard to jam

New research shows Elon Musk’s broadband network could work as an alternative to GPS

SpaceX has already launched more than 700 Starlink satellites, with thousands more due to come online in the years ahead. Their prime mission is to provide high-speed internet virtually worldwide, extending it to many remote locations that have lacked reliable service to date.

Now, research funded by the US Army has concluded that the growing mega-constellation could have a secondary purpose: doubling as a low-cost, highly accurate, and almost unjammable alternative to GPS. The new method would use existing Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) to provide near-global navigation services.

Don’t Try to Pirate Movies On Elon Musk’s Starlink

The Starlink team announced that if people try to openly pirate movies on SpaceX’s satellite internet service Starlink, then one has to be prepared to receive a warning from the company demanding that you stop. Starlink is an initiative by SpaceX with the objective of providing Internet From Space. Recently they have launched the first 60 production satellites of nearly 12,000 planned spacecraft into a low orbit above Earth.

Last weekend, a curious Starlink subscriber tested if SpaceX enforces its policy against downloading copyrighted content. The subscriber, “substrate-97,” indeed received the piracy warning notice and he posted the same from SpaceX on Reddit. “We must insist that you and/or others using your Starlink service refrains from illegal downloads of copyrighted content,” the notice says. “Downloading copyrighted materials without a license may lead to suspension or termination of your service, and put you at risk of legal action by the content owner,” the statement read.

Moreover, Starlink may also try to stop piracy if the ISP detects a download for a bootleg movie. The company will immediately send an automated warning to the offending subscriber. If the ISP recognises a download for a copyrighted movie, the provider can automatically issue a warning notification to the subscriber committing the offence.

Space debris over Puerto Rico (2/7/2022) SAC

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=a7KUSN89-A0

Most of the recent batch of #Starlink satellites launched on February 3, 2022, may have reentered the Earth's atmosphere, or will do it soon, as a recent geomagnetic storm prevented the satellites from reaching their intented orbit, SpaceX said. As of February, over 2,000 Starlink satellites have been launched, as part of a constellation that provides satellite internet access to remote areas, and most of Earth. On February 3, 2022, a Falcon 9 rocket was launched from Cape Canaveral with 49 new Starlink satellites, designated as group G4-7. Soon after the launch, satellite tracking experts suspected something went wrong, as the details of the orbit of these new satellites were not still published.

In fact, it's possible that one or more of the satellites reentered the atmosphere over the Caribbean recently. This video from cameras that monitor the skies of Puerto Rico, from Sociedad de Astronomia del Caribe, shows an interesting event that appears to be related:  first, an object is seen disintegrating, with noticeable fragmentation, which is characteristic of space debris.

Impressive visuals are seen moments later, as just one minute later, a bigger object is seen in a spectacular disintegration event, and satellite tracking experts agree the event is probably related to the Starlink satellites launched on February 3, 2022.It turns out that a recent solar storm may be responsible.

"Unfortunately, the satellites deployed on Thursday were significantly impacted by a geomagnetic storm on Friday. These storms cause the atmosphere to warm and atmospheric density at our low deployment altitudes to increase. In fact, onboard GPS suggests the escalation speed and severity of the storm caused atmospheric drag to increase up to 50 percent higher than during previous launches. The Starlink team commanded the satellites into a safe-mode where they would fly edge-on (like a sheet of paper) to minimize drag—to effectively “take cover from the storm”—and continued to work closely with the Space Force’s 18th Space Control Squadron and LeoLabs to provide updates on the satellites based on ground radars.Preliminary analysis show the increased drag at the low altitudes prevented the satellites from leaving safe-mode to begin orbit raising maneuvers, and up to 40 of the satellites will reenter or already have reentered the Earth’s atmosphere. The deorbiting satellites pose zero collision risk with other satellites and by design demise upon atmospheric reentry—meaning no orbital debris is created and no satellite parts hit the ground.", SpaceX said in a recent update.

Marco Langbroeg, a satellite tracking expert from the Netherlands, said:  "I did astrometry on the Puerto Rico sighting, and the orbital inclination fits the 53.2 degrees of the Starlink launch.  My best guess still remains that this was one of the failed Starlink satellites from Feb 3."

Each Starlink satellite has a size of 10.5 ft (3.2 meter) x 5.25 ft (1.6 meters) and weights 573 lbs. (260 kilograms). Some of the doomed satellites will be reentering the atmosphere during the next few days, and although it is still uncertain exactly where and when, just in case, keep looking up!

Are
#Palantir Technologies, #Starlink, and other tech giants seizing the opportunity to test their products’ war applications on civilians in #Gaza, turning the besieged strip into a proving ground for their technology?

In recent years, the intersection of technology and #warfare has come under public fire, raising profound ethical and legal questions about state military use of advanced tech tools. The role of advanced data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) in modern conflicts is under intense scrutiny, especially when civilian lives are at stake.

As the genocide in Gaza advances, attention is turning to the companies whose technologies may be facilitating Israel’s daily atrocities, with US-based Palantir Technologies among them...

Palantir’s integration in Israel

Companies like Palantir Technologies, led by CEO Alex Karp, have been implicated in enabling some of these atrocities. Its advanced data analytics and AI tools that supposedly provide “precision targeting” are mass-killing civilians and have transformed warfare into a calculated and systematic campaign of extermination with little human oversight.

Founded in 2003 by Karp and Peter Thiel, Palantir Technologies has grown from a secretive data analytics startup to a cornerstone of modern military and intelligence operations. Initially funded by the CIA’s venture capital arm, In-Q-Tel, Palantir’s tech products have become integral to numerous US government agencies, including the FBI, Department of Defense, and various police departments.

This deep entanglement with US intelligence and military bodies paved the way for Palantir’s strategic alignment with Israel.

...The company established an office in Tel Aviv in 2015, strategically located overlooking Rothschild Boulevard on one side and Yehuda Halevy Street on the other.

This location underscores the company’s deep integration into the Israeli tech ecosystem. Karp himself highlighted Palantir’s strong ties to Israel in a December 2023 interview on Fox Business, stating, “We are very well known in Israel. Israel appreciates our product.”

...Palantir’s deep involvement in Israel’s military infrastructure is part of a broader, troubling pattern of technology enabling warfare. That connection extends to another tech giant – SpaceX’s Starlink, led by Elon Musk. Understanding this intricate relationship is crucial to grasping how modern conflicts are increasingly driven by advanced technologies developed by private corporations...
