Artem Shira, vice-president of the Ukrainian Water Association, warned about the risk of a “water-out” — a large-scale disruption of water supply that could be more severe than blackouts.
He said there are effectively no backup water intake systems, and replacement of failed pumps could take weeks. He added that residents are being advised to stock up on water and locate nearby wells or boreholes.
