After restricting a group critical of Thailandโs monarchy, Facebook says it will take legal action against the government
After restricting access to a popular group with posts critical of Thailandโs monarchy, Facebook is planning legal action against the Thai government, which the social media giant says forced it to restrict content deemed to be illegal.
On Monday, Reuters reported access to Royalist Marketplace had been blocked within Thailand. Users there who try to visit the group, which has over a million members, now see a message that says access to it has โbeen restricted within Thailand pursuant to a legal request from the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society.โ

Thailand vows to step up action vs โillegalโ online sites
BANGKOK (AP) โ A top official in Thailand said Wednesday that his country will step up action against online content that breaks its laws, two days after forcing Facebook to block a group that was posting material critical of the monarchy.
Minister of Digital Economy and Society Buddhipongse Punnakanta told a news conference that his department would get a court order within 48 hours to block access in Thailand to any web address deemed to contain illegal material.
The platforms would then have 15 days to comply or face legal action.
โWe are protecting our sovereignty, which may not mean protecting physical borders in the traditional sense but rather, as I said yesterday, that we are protecting our cyber sovereignty,โ said Buddhipongse. He declared that such attacks โhappen fast and are constantly damaging Thais.โ

American faces prison over bad Tripadvisor review of resort in Thailand
An American has been sued by an island resort in Thailand over a negative TripAdvisor review, authorities said Saturday, and could face up to two years in prison if found guilty. Domestic tourism is still happening in Thailand, where coronavirus numbers are relatively low, with locals and expats heading to near-empty resorts -- including Koh Chang island, famed for its sandy beaches and turquoise waters.
But a recent visit to the Sea View Resort on the island landed Wesley Barnes in trouble after he wrote unflattering online reviews about his holiday.
"The Sea View Resort owner filed a complaint that the defendant had posted unfair reviews on his hotel on the Tripadvisor website," Colonel Thanapon Taemsara of Koh Chang police told AFP.

Thailand shop installs system to keep doors shut to customers not wearing masks
Twitter user Niall Harbison shared a video of the shop which has a door fitted with a machine that scans the face of the customer for a mask and also records the body temperature. The doors open only if the machine detects a mask and the customer doesnโt have a fever.

Secret Govโt Order Tells ISP to Block Telegram App
BANGKOK โ A leaked government document ordered internet service providers in Thailand to block access to Telegram, a messaging application used by many anti-government demonstrators to coordinate their campaigns.
The โTop Secretโ order seen by Khaosod English cited the emergency decree that granted security officers power to block and control any information on the internet deemed to cause unrest in the country.
The letter addressed the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, telling the agency to pass its instructions to all service providers.
Telegram plays a major role in organizing anti-government protests in recent days. Many protesters use the application to discuss venues for rallies and skirt the governmentโs social media surveillance.
It is unclear whether the ban on Telegram will actually be carried out. Similar efforts initiated by the Russian government in 2018 failed to block the application.

Two prominent Thai activists have launched legal action accusing Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-chaโs government of using Pegasus spyware to infiltrate their mobile devices during a campaign of anti-government demonstrations in late 2020 and early 2021.
According to The Associated Press, human rights lawyer Arnon Nampa and legal reform advocate Yingcheep Atchanont filed a lawsuit yesterday accusing nine state agencies of unlawfully violating their privacy by using the spyware app, which is produced by the Israeli cybersecurity company NSO Group. Among those are the Office of the Prime Minister, the Royal Thai Police, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, and the three branches of the armed forces.
