توماس پین، روشنفکر انگلیسی‌الاصل و از بنیانگذاران ایالات متحده آمریکا بود. او در آثاری مانند «عقل سلیم» و «حقوق بشر»، از حقوق طبیعی انسانها و برابری سیاسی دفاع می‌کند. اندیشه‌هایی که بعدها در شکل‌گیری لیبرالیسم مدرن و اعلامیهٔ جهانی حقوق بشر نقش مهمی ایفا کردند.
