Iran’s judiciary-affiliated Mizan News Agency announced the execution of Erfan Shakourzadeh, a political prisoner accused of collaboration with U.S. and Israeli intelligence agencies, on Monday, May 11, 2026.”

According to reports published by Iranian judicial authorities, the case against Shakourzadeh centered on national security allegations, including the transfer of information related to a scientific institution active in satellite technology. State media claimed that, due to his academic expertise, he had been in contact with foreign intelligence agencies and that some of the information involved was classified.

Erfan Shakourzadeh was arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intelligence forces in February 2025. Following his detention, he was prosecuted on charges including espionage and collaboration with “hostile governments.” He was later sentenced to death, and the sentence was reportedly upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court shortly before its implementation.

As of the time of publication, no independent information has been released regarding the legal proceedings, his access to a lawyer of his own choosing, or the details of the court hearings. Human rights organizations have repeatedly raised concerns over the lack of transparency in Iran’s security-related cases, particularly those involving severe punishments and allegations of forced confessions or closed-door trials.

The execution comes amid reports of increasing political repression, intensified crackdowns on detainees, and a rising number of executions across Iran. Human rights groups warn that, in the context of ongoing political tensions and security crises, the expanded use of the death penalty has increasingly been used as a tool to instill fear and tighten social control.

Mohammad Abbasi, one of the detainees arrested during Iran’s nationwide protests in January 2026, was executed at dawn on Wednesday, May 13, in Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj. The news was first reported by HRANA, citing a source close to his family.

According to the report, prison authorities had asked Abbasi’s family to come to Qezel Hesar Prison for a final visit before the execution. However, after they arrived, they were denied the opportunity to see him. The source said the family later learned of his execution through a phone call after leaving the prison.

Abbasi had been arrested in connection with the killing of Shahin Dehghani Kakavandi, a police officer in Malard. Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Abolqasem Salavati, sentenced him to death on charges including “waging war against God” (moharebeh) and collaboration with hostile governments. The sentence was recently upheld by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court.

In the same case, Fatemeh Abbasi, Mohammad Abbasi’s daughter, was sentenced to 25 years in prison and is currently being held in the women’s ward of Evin Prison.

Earlier, defense attorney Ali Sharifzadeh Ardakani stated that he and other independent lawyers had been barred from representing the defendants under Note to Article 48 of Iran’s Criminal Procedure Code. Reports have also indicated that the defendants were subjected to pressure and torture during interrogations and were denied access to legal counsel throughout various stages of the judicial process.

According to HRANA, Mohammad Abbasi is the fourteenth person executed in connection with the January 2026 protests. The agency also reported that, amid the recent escalation of military tensions, the number of prisoners executed on political and security-related charges during this period has risen to 32.

The Committee for the Freedom of Political Prisoners has issued a statement warning about the conditions faced by women prisoners in Yazd Prison, describing the situation in the women’s ward as inhumane. According to the information released, a number of detainees arrested during recent protests are facing harsh sentences sentences or prolonged legal uncertainty while being held in conditions that have raised serious concerns about their physical and psychological well-being.

According to the published information, some of the detained women have reportedly been prosecuted solely for social media-related activities, including reposting content or reacting to online posts, and have subsequently faced severe punishments.

The statement also highlights the lack of separation of crimes within the women’s ward of Yazd Prison. Political detainees and prisoners of conscience are reportedly being held alongside inmates convicted of drug-related offenses, a situation human rights advocates say places additional psychological pressure on the detainees and threatens their safety and well-being.

In another part of the statement, concern was expressed over the condition of Kurdish political prisoner Zeinab Jalalian. Having spent years in exile imprisonment, she is reportedly in urgent need of medical treatment, and continued deprivation of adequate healthcare could place her at serious risk of vision loss.

Maryam Nouri, who was arrested during the January 2026 protests in Mashhad, remains without a clear legal status nearly four months after her detention. She is reportedly being held in Ward “Aramesh” of Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, while judicial authorities have continued to refuse her temporary release on bail.

Nouri was arrested on January 14, 2026, amid the wave of public protests in Mashhad. Her detention came only days after her husband, Ashkan Torabzadeh, was killed on January 9 after government forces allegedly opened direct fire on him. According to available information, he was inside his personal vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Informed sources state that Maryam Nouri’s case remains unresolved and that she has been denied access to a fair judicial process throughout the past several months. Human rights groups have repeatedly described pressure on the families of those killed during the protests as part of a broader pattern of repression aimed at silencing demands for truth and accountability.

As of the time of publication, no clear information has been released regarding the charges brought against Maryam Nouri or the authority responsible for her arrest. Uncertainty surrounding her legal status continues.

Hossein Jafari, a political prisoner and who was injured during Iran’s 2022 nationwide protests, has once again been arrested by security forces and transferred to Qezel Hesar Prison after spending several months hospitalized at Aminabad Psychiatric Hospital. The move has intensified concerns over his mental condition and physical safety.

Jafari was first injured during the 2022 “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests, when he was struck by shotgun pellets fired by government forces, sustaining injuries to his eye and face. His name later became known in the media through connections with other protesters who suffered eye injuries, and he came to be recognized as one of the victims of the violent crackdown on the protests.

On the first anniversary of 2022 protests, he was arrested at his home and transferred to Karaj Central Penitentiary. A joint case was later opened against him and seven other activists and injured protesters in one of the branches of the Revolutionary Court in Karaj. He was subsequently released temporarily on bail.

However, following his release, Jafari was arrested again in Tehran after an altercation with security agents and transferred to Fashafouyeh Prison. According to informed sources, his physical and psychological condition had deteriorated to such an extent that prison authorities issued a certificate declaring him medically unfit to endure imprisonment, which eventually led to his release.

That release proved short-lived. He was arrested again and transferred to Kerman Prison, where he spent around eighty days in detention, including a period held in special suites designated for prisoners awaiting execution. Sources close to him say that the severe psychological pressure and harsh prison conditions caused serious damage to his mental health.

After his mental condition worsened, Hossein Jafari was transferred to Aminabad Psychiatric Hospital, where he remained under medical care for several months. Nevertheless, during the protests in January, security forces reportedly entered the medical facility, rearrested him, and transferred him to Qezel Hesar Prison.

Sources close to the political prisoner have warned that transferring him from a psychiatric treatment center back to prison, particularly while he remains in a critical mental state and is being held alongside prisoners accused of violent crimes, places his life at serious risk.

According to a report published by Tavaana, Alireza Khani Shekarab, a prisoner sentenced to death on espionage charges, was transferred on Saturday, May 16, from Evin Prison to Ghezel Hesar Prison.

At the time of writing, no detailed information has been released regarding the legal proceedings in his case, including the date of his arrest, the court branch that handled the case, or the circumstances surrounding the issuance of his death sentence.

In recent months, following the January protests and the military conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, multiple reports have emerged of executions being carried out at Ghezel Hesar Prison, which has become one of the main sites for executions in Iran. In this context, the transfer of Alireza Khani Shekarab to the prison has intensified concerns over the possible imminent implementation of his death sentence.

Human rights activists have repeatedly raised concerns over the issuance and implementation of death sentences in security-related cases, particularly those involving charges such as espionage.

Javad Alikordi, a resident of Sabzevar and the brother of the late attorney Khosrow Alikordi, has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment by the Revolutionary Court in Mashhad. He is currently being held in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, while no clear information has been released regarding the charges brought against him.

Javad Alikordi was arrested on the night of December 12, 2025, after publishing a video protesting the security forces’ crackdown on attendees at his brother’s seventh-day memorial ceremony. In the video, he challenged the Iranian authorities’ official account of Khosrow Alikordi’s death and stated that he possessed confidential documents related to the case.

Khosrow Alikordi, a prominent lawyer known for representing justice-seeking families, died on December 5, 2025, under suspicious circumstances in his office. While state authorities attributed his death to cardiac arrest, his family rejected the official narrative and called for transparency, citing signs including unusual bleeding.

The harsh sentence issued against Javad Alikordi is seen as part of the ongoing pressure and intimidation targeting the Alikordi family and others who have questioned the government’s narrative surrounding Khosrow Alikordi’s death.

Hadi Abbasian, a resident of Shirvan, North Khorasan province, has been transferred to the city’s prison following his arrest by security forces of the Islamic Republic. Reports received indicate that security agents raided his home on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, violently assaulted him during the arrest, and beat him so severely that he lost consciousness. He was reportedly taken first to a hospital and later transferred to Shirvan Prison. Images published after the raid show extensive damage and disorder inside his home.

According to informed sources, Abbasian’s arrest is linked to his support for the nationwide protests of January 2026. He had previously posted videos on social media expressing support for protesters and their demands.

Two days after his arrest, state-affiliated media outlets released a video described as a “confession” by Abbasian. Iran’s Mehr News Agency, quoting local police and judicial officials in Shirvan, accused him of participating in the protests, “encouraging unrest,” and spreading reports related to his alleged death. Authorities further claimed that he had attempted to stage a “fake killing scenario.”

The prosecutor of Shirvan also alleged that Abbasian had used social media to encourage people to engage in “rioting” and “destruction of public property.” However, no independent evidence has been presented to substantiate these claims, and judicial and security authorities have provided no information regarding his condition, access to legal counsel, or the circumstances of his detention.

In recent years, the Islamic Republic’s security and judicial authorities have repeatedly relied on forced confessions from detainees, particularly in political and security-related cases, as grounds for issuing harsh sentences and securing convictions.

According to a report received by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, in a new development in Roya Ostovar’s case in May 2026, Branch 47 of the Isfahan Province Court of Appeals upheld the verdict issued by the Isfahan Revolutionary Court.

Under the ruling, Roya Ostovar, a Baha’i citizen, was sentenced to five years of imprisonment, a monetary fine, and deprivation of social rights for 15 years on charges of “educational and propagandistic activities disrupting Islam through establishing and managing a WhatsApp group chat about the Baha’i faith.” She was also sentenced to an additional one year in prison on charges of disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic through the publication of online content.

The court ruling states that the online content shared by the defendant and several other Baha’i citizens had allegedly been disseminated under the direction of the Universal House of Justice (the supreme governing body of the Baháʼí Faith) and was deemed to have caused “deviation within Islam.” The court cited this allegation, along with what it described as “multiple offenses,” as grounds for imposing the harshest sentence.

According to Roya Ostovar, however, the WhatsApp group in question had only nine members, three of whom were Baha’i. The alleged evidence cited in the case reportedly included sending greetings for the Festival of Ridván and sharing a photograph in which the Baha’i Greatest Name symbol appeared in one corner.

Reports further indicate that the two appellate judges in the case, Ali Dayani and Sajjad Panahi Dorcheh, displayed highly aggressive behavior during the proceedings. Ali Dayani has previously presided over numerous political and religious cases in Isfahan Province, including the recent confirmation of harsh sentences issued against 10 Baha’i women by the Isfahan Court of Appeals. Sajjad Panahi Dorcheh, formerly the head of the judiciary in Najafabad, has also been involved in issuing rulings in security-related cases as well as cases involving journalists and local labor activists.

According to information received, Roya Ostovar had earlier been prosecuted in February 2026 by Branch 11 of the Isfahan Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office, headed by Vahid Hemmatnejad. She was interrogated in June 2024 upon entering Iran through Isfahan Airport, where her electronic devices and passport were confiscated. She was later released on bail set at one billion tomans (approximately $21,000), and the final court session was reportedly held in her absence.
