According to information received by the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, several people arrested during the January 2026 protests in Shandiz, near Mashhad, are facing serious criminal charges, raising concerns about their safety and legal status. Informed sources identified the detainees as Ilya Akbari, Ali Zaghi, Mehdi Zarif, Matin Shabani, Farshad Hosseinpour, Majid Hosseinpour, Hossein Safarpour, sajjad cherani and Hossein Rasouli. The sources warned that all of them are at risk, with Mehdi Zarif and Ali Zaghi facing the greatest danger of execution.
According to the information received and publicly available reports, Mehdi Zarif, a young man from Shandiz who was arrested during the January 2026 protests, has been sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court in Mashhad. Informed sources said the sentence was issued under the Law on Intensifying the Punishment for Espionage and Collaboration with the Zionist Regime and Hostile States, as well as on charges including waging war against God (moharebeh). Reports indicate that the court's ruling presented no evidence of any direct links between Zarif and the United States or Israel, including receiving instructions, financial support, or ganizational ties, and that the case was based primarily on his participation in the protests and the actions attributed to him during the protests.
Sources close to Zarif's family said they had been under pressure from security agencies for months to refrain from speaking publicly about his case. However, the family was recently told to come for a final visit, significantly heightening fears that his death sentence may be carried out imminently.

Kaveh Arabian, a 32-year-old man detained during the January 2026 protests in Yazd, has been transferred from the city's Central Prison to an undisclosed location, raising serious concerns that his execution may be imminent. His death sentence was previously upheld by the Supreme Court.
According to a report by Iran Human Rights, Arabian was removed from the general ward of Yazd Central Prison on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 28, after a final visit with his family. An informed source told the organization that he had been transferred for the carrying out of his death sentence. The source also said that security authorities had repeatedly warned his family not to speak publicly about the case or seek support from human rights organizations or other groups.
Arabian was arrested in Yazd on January 12, 2026. At the time of his arrest, he was the father of a two-month-old infant and the sole provider for both his immediate family and his parents. According to published reports, he was denied the right to choose his own lawyer and was not even provided with a court-appointed attorney during the legal proceedings.
Branch 1 of the Yazd Revolutionary Court sentenced Arabian to death on charges including waging war against God (Moharebeh) through disrupting national security, arson of public property, and the killing of a Basij member. The sentence was later upheld by Branch 9 of the Supreme Court.
Iran Human Rights previously reported that Arabian was held for 68 days in an IRGC Intelligence detention facility, where he was allegedly subjected to torture in an effort to extract forced confessions. Two other defendants in the same case, Ali Daneshparvar and Esmail Ramezanpour, have also been sentenced to death, while their cases remain pending before the Supreme Court.

The judiciary-affiliated Mizan News Agency has announced the execution of two prisoners, Omid Behzad and Pouria Safvat, in the early hours of Monday, August 3, 2026. According to Mizan, the two men had been sentenced to death on charges of transmitting information, including the coordinates of military and security sites, to Israel's intelligence agency, Mossad. The report, however, did not disclose where the executions were carried out or provide any details about where the two men had been held.
According to information obtained by human rights sources, no public information had been released about the men's arrests, legal proceedings, or death sentences before the announcement of their executions. No official details regarding the timing of their arrests or the judicial process had been made public.
Mizan alleged that Behzad and Safvat transmitted information, photographs, and the coordinates of military and security facilities to Mossad and the television network Iran International during the so-called "40-Day War" and the "12-Day War." The agency also claimed that Behzad used location-based applications to identify and transmit the coordinates of these sites. However, no evidence or court documents supporting these allegations have been publicly disclosed.
Information obtained by human rights sources further indicates that the two men were held in an undisclosed location from the time of their arrest until their executions. They were reportedly denied access to legal counsel of their own choosing, family visits, and other basic fair trial rights. Their video confessions are also believed to have been extracted under torture and other forms of coercion while they were held in solitary confinement.
As of the time of publication, no information has been released regarding where the two men were detained, where the executions took place, or whether their bodies have been returned to their families. Significant questions surrounding their detention, trial, and execution remain unanswered.
