Heidar Nekoosirat, an activist from Mashhad, is currently held in Ward 104 of Vakilabad prison in Mashhad. He was arrested in connection with the protests of 8 and 9 January, 2026.

Mr. Nekoosirat has diabetes and kidney failure and has already lost sight in one eye. Given his medical condition and the circumstances of his detention, the vision in his remaining eye is also at risk.

He has repeatedly reported his condition to prison and judicial authorities and has offered to cover the cost of his own treatment in order to be transferred to a hospital outside the prison for surgery and care. To date he has received only verbal assurances, and no effective treatment has been provided. Requests for conditional release under electronic monitoring have likewise been denied.

Under international standards, including the “Nelson Mandela Rules,” the state is responsible for providing prisoners with adequate medical care, and denying a prisoner treatment amounts to inhuman treatment.

Ghaem (Arian) Hosseini, who was arrested in connection to the January 2026 protests in Isfahan, was executed on Thursday morning, August 20. His execution was based on national security-related charges and the account presented by the Islamic Republic’s judicial authorities in a case marred by serious reported violations of the right to a fair trial. Mizan News Agency, which is affiliated with Iran’s judiciary, announced the execution, stating that Hosseini’s death sentence had been upheld by the Supreme Court. The location of the execution was not disclosed.

The case, commonly referred to as the “Alikhani Square” case, stems from events on January 8, 2026, during protests in the Malek-Shahr area of Isfahan, in which four police officers died. Without providing evidence that could be independently verified, the Islamic Republic’s judiciary accused Hosseini of involvement in the events that night and of setting fire to property belonging to a charity. He was sentenced to death on charges including “waging war against God” (moharebeh), “corruption on Earth” (efsad-e fel-arz), acting against national security, and destruction of public property. Mizan also cited statements and confessions attributed to defendants in the case, while no independent information has been made available about the circumstances under which those statements were obtained or whether the defendants had effective access to legal counsel during interrogation.

Hosseini is the fifth person to be executed in connection with the case. Erfan Esfandiari and Golmohammad Mohammadi were executed on July 19, while Abolfazl Sepahi and Amirhossein Safari were executed on July 28. Fifteen defendants were initially sentenced to death. According to published information, one of those sentences was overturned by a higher judicial authority, while the death sentences of the other 14 defendants were upheld. Several defendants in the case therefore remain at risk of execution.

Reports concerning the proceedings indicate that defense lawyers faced restrictions on effective access to case files, were unable to obtain copies of court rulings, and that hearings were conducted by videoconference. Families were also reportedly kept uninformed about the details of the charges and evidence, while the court disregarded evidence presented by the defense. Under these circumstances, the charges used as the basis for the death sentences were not adjudicated through proceedings that met fundamental fair-trial guarantees.

Girls killed in the crackdown of January 2026

• During the crackdown of January 2026, the Islamic Republic’s security forces
killed thousands of Iranians. Among them were girls and young women who had gone out to protest peacefully.

• Families were pressured into small or secret burials, sometimes at night, and told not to speak publicly about what had happened to their daughters. State media called the dead “rioters.” The internet had been cut for days, so the scale of it stayed hidden for a time.

• Thousands more were arrested, girls and young women among them. Most were held without access to their families or lawyers. Some remain unaccounted for.

• Sevda Akramifard, Nazanin Zahra Salehi, Ghazal Janghorban, Arnika Dabbagh, Melina Asadi, Bahar Shadmehri, Kimia Kamyab, Faezeh Izadi, Nazanin Esmikhani, Esra Tavousinia, Sana Tousangi, Yalda Mohammadkhani, Setayesh Samadi, Niousha Hamidi, Shiva Javid, Melika Shahmoradi, Fatemeh-Raha Tajian, Samira Khani, Bahar Hosseini are among the confirmed deaths. There are many more ...

• A name is the last thing a state can take, and the first thing anyone can give back. So repeat them. Today, and next January, when the news has moved on and those who gave the orders are counting on you having forgotten.

The Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence imposed on Arghavan Fallahi, a 24-year-old political prisoner held in Evin Prison. The sentence was previously issued by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Abolghasem Salavati, on the charge of “armed rebellion against the Islamic Republic (Baghy).”

According to HRANA, the Revolutionary Court sentenced Fallahi to death in July 2026. Previous reports indicated that the court invoked Article 287 of the Islamic Penal Code and based its ruling on allegations that she had joined groups opposed to the Islamic Republic and engaged in “armed activity.” No details have yet been released about the Supreme Court’s review of the case or the branch that upheld the sentence.

Fallahi was arrested by security forces in late January 2025 and initially transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison, which is administered by the Ministry of Intelligence. According to published reports, she spent a significant part of her detention in the prison’s security wards 209 and 241, where she was subjected to severe psychological pressure and interrogated in an effort to extract forced confessions. Some of the interrogations were reportedly related to the killings of judges Mohammad Moghiseh and Ali Razini. However, no independently verifiable evidence linking Fallahi to that case has been made public.

Following the Israeli attack on Evin Prison in June 2025, Fallahi was first transferred to Greater Tehran Prison and later to Qarchak Prison in Varamin. She was subsequently returned to Evin Prison, where she remains incarcerated.

This is not Fallahi’s first arrest. Security forces previously detained her and her father in November 2022. In that case, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari, sentenced her to two years in prison on charges of “assembly and collusion” and “disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic.” She was released after serving the full sentence but was arrested again several months later and now faces execution.

Children Are Not Soldiers. Children Are Not Shields.

For decades, children in Iran have faced recruitment, militarization, and exposure to state repression—including during protests and armed conflict.

Iran is a State Party to the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Yet its obligations have been repeatedly violated.

Children must be protected—not recruited, militarized, or used in repression.

Maryam Khosravi, Fatemeh Jami, and Masoumeh Azhini remain imprisoned in Gorgan. Khosravi has been sentenced to more than two years in prison, while Jami and Azhini continue to face prolonged legal uncertainty weeks and months after their arrests.

Khosravi, a mother of three, has been detained since the night of Chaharshanbe Suri, the traditional fire festival held before the Persian New Year. According to information received, she has been sentenced to a total of two years and three months in prison in the case brought against her.

Despite her months-long detention, officials have rejected requests to grant Khosravi temporary leave or allow her to serve the remainder of her sentence under electronic monitoring.

Jami, an environmental activist and the mother of a 16-year-old son, was arrested at her home in Gorgan by Iran’s Cyber Police on June 30, 2026. Her arrest was linked to her online activities, particularly on Instagram, and she was formally charged at the Gorgan Prosecutor’s Office.

Fifty-three days after her arrest, Jami’s case remains under investigation at the Gorgan Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office, and no court hearing has been held. She remains imprisoned in Gorgan without a final determination in her case.

Azhini, 63, is the sister of Mahmoud Azhini, a political prisoner executed during the 1988 mass executions of political prisoners. She was arrested on April 4, 2026.

She had previously been arrested in 2019 for seeking justice for her brother and spent approximately one year in Fardis Prison in Karaj. Following her release, reports indicated that she continued to face pressure, summonses, and threats from security agencies.

Now, 140 days after her arrest, Azhini remains imprisoned in Gorgan amid continued legal uncertainty. According to the latest information, the Gorgan Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor’s Office set bail for her temporary release, which her family secured. Nevertheless, authorities have continued to block her release.

Jami and Azhini remain imprisoned without a final judicial determination, while Khosravi, despite being a mother of three, continues to be denied temporary leave and the option of serving her sentence under electronic monitoring.

Hossein Molaei, the brother of Ali Molaei, who was killed during the 2022 protests in Izeh, has been transferred to Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz after being subjected to violence and sustaining physical injuries during his arrest.

On August 15, Hossein Molaei was traveling to Ahvaz to accompany his ailing father and seek medical treatment for him when he was arrested by IRGC forces. According to available information, officers beat him during the arrest, breaking his hand and inflicting other injuries.

His injuries were severe enough that, after being taken to Izeh, he was transferred to a hospital emergency department for medical care. He was subsequently taken to Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz, where he is currently being held.

Hossein Molaei is the father of two young children. His brother, Ali Molaei, was a 23-year-old newlywed who was killed on November 16, 2022, when government forces opened fire directly at his vehicle during the protests in Izeh.

Hossein Molaei’s arrest while he was on his way to seek treatment for his ailing father is another example of the continuing pressure on families seeking justice and the relatives of those killed during the protests.

Majid Adineh, who was detained during the nationwide protests in January 2026, was executed on the morning of Sunday, August 23, 2026. Mizan, a news agency affiliated with the Islamic Republic’s judiciary, reported that his death sentence was carried out after being upheld by the Supreme Court. The location of the execution was not disclosed.

Adineh was arrested by the Alborz Province IRGC Intelligence Organization in Mohammadshahr, Karaj, on the evening of January 9, amid protests marked by the Islamic Republic’s bloody crackdown and killing of demonstrators. The judiciary claims that a handgun, ammunition, and other equipment were found in his possession. It has also alleged that the weapon attributed to him had been fired on January 8 and 9—an assertion that has not been independently verified.

Adineh faced several security-related charges before the Revolutionary Court in Karaj. He was ultimately sentenced to death and the confiscation of all his property on the charge of “carrying out operations on behalf of Israel, the United States, and hostile states and groups against national security and interests.” The judiciary has characterized the January protests as a “coup” and alleged that he had ties to foreign governments and groups.

No independent information has been released about the conduct of the trial, Adineh’s access to a lawyer of his choosing, the conditions under which he was interrogated, or how the statements attributed to him were obtained. His execution following such opaque proceedings raises serious concerns about violations of his right to a fair trial and the use of the death penalty against those detained during the January 2026 protests.
