Indonesia imposes 10% VAT on Facebook, Disney, Tiktok: tax office

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia has added more techology companies that will be obligated to apply 10% value-added tax on sales to Indonesian customers to include Facebook, Disney and TikTok, the tax office said in a statement on Friday.

Southeast Asia’s biggest country, which has a population of nearly 270 million people, announced last month it will impose 10% VAT on sales by technology firms including Amazon, Netflix, Spotify and Google, as spending patterns shift with increased remote working amid the pandemic, which has hit government finances.

Exclusive: ByteDance censored anti-China content in Indonesia until mid-2020, say sources

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Chinese tech giant ByteDance censored content it perceived as critical of the Chinese government on its news aggregator app in Indonesia from 2018 to mid-2020, six people with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

The sources said that local moderators were instructed by a team from ByteDance’s Beijing headquarters to delete articles seen as “negative” about Chinese authorities on the Baca Berita (BaBe) app.

In a statement to Reuters, BaBe said it disagreed with the claims and that it moderates content according to its community guidelines and in line with Indonesia’s local laws.

Not Oke: Social media live streaming may be banned in Indonesia if court approves network’s broadcast judicial review

Want to start a live video stream on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube? The very harmless act may require a permit if Indonesia’s Constitutional Court (MK) approves a judicial review on broadcast law filed by one of the country’s leading TV networks.

In May, RCTI and iNews, both of which are owned by the conglomerate MNC Group, filed a judicial review with MK demanding revisions to Law No. 32/2002 on Broadcast to make OTT media services like Netflix and YouTube be subject to the same regulations as traditional broadcast media.

In a virtual hearing yesterday, the Information and Communications Ministry (Kominfo) outlined a possible outrageous implication should the judicial review be granted.

Sandy’s success, becoming his family’s main breadwinner as global brands like Coca Cola or Suntory pay to have their names on his light-hearted clips, comes as TikTok mushrooms across Southeast Asia. Data trackers show it’s been downloaded hundreds of millions of times already in a region with a collective population of 630 million - half of them under 30.

Indonesia’s ethical hackers take on perceptions and the government

Bug hunters and white hats want to be a force for good, tackling cyberthreats from scammers and the authorities.

Teguh Aprianto thought he was doing the Indonesian National Police a favor when he sent them a message on Twitter in June last year: “Hello @DivHumasPolri, time to clean up. Someone claims to have succeeded in breaking into the data of all members of the National Police. This person can now easily access, search and change the data.”

Aprianto, a white hat hacker and private cybersecurity consultant, noticed a user on RaidForums — a marketplace and forum for hackers — who claimed to have broken into the database.

But rather than a thank you, Aprianto got anonymous calls to his WhatsApp number and a visit from the police. He refused to accompany them back to the station, on the promise that he would go voluntarily with his lawyers the next day, he told Rest of World. By the time he arrived, the Ministry of Communications and Informatics (Kominfo) had issued a public statement that his well-meaning warning was a hoax. His Twitter account was suspended.

Israeli-made spyware Pegasus used in Indonesia since 2018, says IndonesiaLeaks - Politics - The Jakarta Post – 2023

An investigation from whistleblower platform IndonesiaLeaks published on Monday uncovered possible evidence that Pegasus, a spyware from Israeli cyber-intelligence firm NSO Group, had been in use on Indonesian soil since 2018, with the police and the intelligence agency allegedly being some of its users.

“The IndonesiaLeaks consortium found indications of the NSO Group spyware [entering Indonesia] through the shipping manifest of PT Mandala Wangi Kreasindo," the report published in Tempo weekly magazine said. Tempo is among the members of the consortium, along with a number of other Indonesian media outlets and civil society organizations.

Researchers spot new infrastructure likely used for Predator spyware

"New research from Recorded Future’s Insikt Group examines newly discovered infrastructure related to the operators of Predator, a mercenary mobile spyware. This infrastructure is believed to be in use in at least eleven countries, including #Angola, #Armenia, #Botswana, #Egypt, #Indonesia, #Kazakhstan, #Mongolia, #Oman, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia (#KSA), and #Trinidad and #Tobago.

Notably, this is the first identification of Predator customers in #Botswana and the #Philippines. Despite being marketed for counterterrorism and law enforcement, Predator is often used against civil society, targeting journalists, politicians, and activists, with no specific victims or targets currently identified in this latest activity."
