We will protect this priceless knowledge by storing multiple copies, on an ongoing basis, across various data formats and locations, including a very-long-term archive designed to last at least 1,000 years.

Secret Service: Norway plans surveillance of Internet traffic

The Norwegian government is pushing for a new surveillance law despite the pandemic. The secret service is to be allowed to store metadata from telephone and internet use for 18 months.

While the European public is preoccupied with the corona virus, the Norwegian government has sent a proposal for mass surveillance of telecommunications to parliament without much fuss. The new law would allow the Norwegian Foreign Intelligence Service to eavesdrop on any communication with foreign countries and to store metadata for up to 18 months.

Norwegian providers will be legally obliged to have the secret service mirror all cross-border data transfers. The secret service may, with the consent of a court, evaluate the data according to defined search criteria, so-called selectors.

The focus is on foreign contacts, the government says: data from within the country should be filtered out as far as possible. But even if some data is filtered, most communication on the Internet runs via servers in other countries. Metadata such as IP addresses of website calls would be stored millions of times over under the law, as would telephone numbers and the duration of calls abroad.

Defense Minister Frank Bakke-Jensen considers the law to be unpostponable even in the pandemic. "Although the government's main concern at the moment is how to deal with the coronavirus situation, we must continue to work on other important issues," he said in writing in response to an inquiry from netzpolitik.org.

The Scene: A Stress Headache That Most Pirates Can Do Without

Many up-and-coming pirates dream of one day being elite enough to become a member of The Scene, hoping to bathe in the collective mystery, kudos and notoriety it exudes. But for most, however, the headaches and stress would probably outweigh the benefits of this exclusive 'club'.

Over the past two weeks ‘The Scene’, the individuals, groups, and entities that are often described as sitting at the top of the so-called ‘Piracy Pyramid’, has been thrust into the mainstream media.

A US Government-led operation, carried out on several continents against the ‘Sparks Conspiracy‘, listed three individuals from the UK, US and Norway as the main targets of a massive investigation. What took place on the ground, however, ended up being something much, much bigger.

While SPARKS and related groups GECKOS, DRONES, ROVERS and SPLINTERS were placed front and center, operations like this don’t and can’t operate in a vacuum. These groups were part of an organic network built up over years and, as such, their activities and members touched huge numbers of disparate yet interconnected individuals involved in the piracy world overall, not just ‘The Scene’ itself.

One of the interesting things about The Scene is that over almost two decades, it has gained almost mythical status as an almost impossible-to-penetrate ‘place’ where only the most elite of pirates hang out. As a result, many people aspire to become a ‘member’ one day, hoping to bathe in the collective mystery, kudos and notoriety.

What the unfolding events of the past two weeks have shown, however, is that The Scene is already much closer to regular pirates than most people might think, touching and even intermingling at some level with private and public torrent sites, streaming platforms, and similar services.

Statistics Norway (SSB) is the state entity in charge of collecting, producing and communicating statistics related to the economy, population and society at national, regional and local level. As everything related to a person living in Norway is linked to their fødselnummer (birth number), the SSB already knows where you live, what you earn and what is on your criminal record.
