Sima Noori was a child when war drove her family from Kunduz, Afghanistan, to Iran. Years later, with a master's degree in international relations, she returned to Afghanistan as a representative of migrants at the Loya Jirga, determined to help rebuild her country.
She went on to work in the energy sector, a field where women were rarely seen. By her account, that visibility made her a target of persistent threats from the Taliban and other extremist groups. She and her father were targeted in an assassination attempt, and her father was wounded.
Through all those years, Sima never gave up on education. She set up literacy classes for women and helped establish three schools for more than 600 undocumented migrant children. That work came at a heavy cost: legal pressure, confiscated documents, and ultimately, being forced to leave once again.
Today, Sima lives in Norway. In her words, "My geography has changed, not my mission." She is a co-founder of the Hazara Women's Global Movement and campaigns for the recognition of gender apartheid in Afghanistan.
For more than five years, she has run a shelter in Pakistan that has given refuge to some 500 to 600 people, including women heads of household, protesters, survivors of war, and members of religious and ethnic minorities.
Her story carries even greater weight at a time when girls in Afghanistan are still barred from education beyond primary school. For Sima, justice means a day when no girl is denied her dreams or her right to education because of her gender.
We stand with Sima. Denying girls an education is a flagrant violation of human rights, and the international community must not remain silent.

Omid Ghanouni, a 17-year-old from Arjanak village in Khansar County, Isfahan Province, died following his arrest and reported beating. His family gathered outside Vist police station on Thursday, October 8, 2026, demanding accountability. His funeral was held on Friday, October 9, with a large turnout.
According to Iran International, citing an informed source, Omid’s father saw his son in critical condition at the courthouse the day after his arrest and asked that he be taken to hospital. He even offered to be detained in his son’s place, but judicial authorities refused.
According to the same report, on the evening of October 5, Omid was dragged from his home and handed over to police following an argument with a member of the Basij militia. The informed source said he was beaten, including with a rifle butt, during his arrest. The following day, after he fell from a chair, his body was taken to Fatemiyeh Hospital in Khansar.
The informed source said medical staff identified internal bleeding caused by severe beating as the cause of death. The source also reported visible bruising on Omid’s face and body, as well as obstacles to obtaining his death certificate.

Paniz is seventeen. She dreamed of studying interior design in high school, but because the program wasn’t offered in her hometown, she enrolled in a vocational high school and studied accounting instead. Starting in seventh grade, she worked at a hair salon alongside her studies, learning keratin hair treatments to help ease her mother’s financial burden. After escaping domestic violence, her mother had been left to raise the family on her own.
After six years, Paniz cut off the hair that had grown to her waist and sold it to a hair broker through Divar, an online classifieds platform in Iran, for 30 million tomans (approximately $150 at the average exchange rate over the past six months). Her mother was saddened by the decision, and Paniz, heartbroken that she had been unable to make her happy, moved from one sorrow to another.
Her classmates saw her beauty as something lost. Before they recognized her courage in fighting to survive, or her resourcefulness in turning her hair into a means of survival, they noticed only its absence. It was as though the world mourned the loss of a girl’s conventional beauty before acknowledging what she had sacrificed simply to get by.
Paniz says:
“When the broker placed the first pair of scissors near the roots of my hair, the tears began to fall uncontrollably. I wish I could cut away helplessness, too, and throw it aside.
But hair grows back. So do we.
I will keep standing until the day women whose dreams have been stolen are free, girls who have been left without support are safe, and children are no longer forced to carry life’s burdens before their time. I will keep standing so that no girl like me is denied her final exams because of a coat of nail polish or a few strands of hair showing beneath her headscarf.
My hair will grow back. We will bloom again. We will not sell our dreams. No pair of scissors has the right to cut away our hopes for freedom and justice.”
All seventeen-year-old Paniz dreams of is a safe roof over her head: a home of her own, where fear does not dictate daily life and peace is not an unattainable dream. A place where safety is an unconditional right.
