UnifiedNLP Backends

MicroG needs some backends to get network Location.

I should take these two paragraphs to clarify that Network location is NOT GPS. MicroG has nothing to do with your GPS. Network Location is that hugely approximated wide-circle that appears before you get a GPS Lock.

If you cannot get a location even on device only location mode, it's not MicroG. It's your app, your ROM, your device, or your cursed house. Change any of these.

So, there are various Location Backends available, whose pros and cons have been detailed in the UNLP readme, along with their FDroid download links if your installer did not include them.

Enable high accuracy location, enable the backends you want in microg unifiednlp section and click on the gears to configure them

Troubleshooting
-If location (NLP) is not working:
--download and install this: https://f-droid.org/app/com.vonglasow.michael.satstat
--Enable High Acccuracy Location and open SatStat. Wait for it to get your location.
--Don't close SatStat, minimize it and open MicroG Settings > Self-Check. All boxes shold be checked.

Developer of Maps (F-Droid) needs help. It seems there is no possibility to use the official maps.me map server anymore (or a mirror), the only option is building our own maps. He is looking for people who could kindly provide a server with updates for the whole planet. It takes more than 3 days to generate the data and about 400GB of free space.

OpenDroneMap (ODM)

ODM is an open source command line toolkit for processing aerial drone imagery. Typical drones use simple point-and-shoot cameras, so the images from drones, while from a different perspective, are similar to any pictures taken from point-and-shoot cameras, i.e. non-metric imagery. OpenDroneMap turns those simple images into three dimensional geographic data that can be used in combination with other geographic datasets.

MapKnitter (MapKnitter.org)

is a free and open source tool for combining and positioning images (often from MapMill.org) in geographic space into a composite image map. Known as “orthorectification” or “georectification” to geographers, this step covers the process of figuring out where images can be placed on an existing map, and how they can be combined, or “stitched” together. You are likely to have many images of overlapping or identical areas, which is why MapMill or some type of sorting is used to determine which source images to use from the original set.

MapKnitter can make maps from any image source, but it particularly lends itself to making maps with balloons and kites. The manual process of making maps with MapKnitter differs greatly from automated aerial imaging systems. In those systems the imaging is of a higher precision and processed with spatial and telemetry data collected along with the imagery, typically at higher altitudes and with consistent image overlap in the flight path sequence.

With MapKnitter the cartographer dynamically places each image and selects which images to include in the mosaic. Although the approaches are similar in that they use some type of additional information (usually pre-existing imagery of a lower resolution) as a reference, and that they are bound to specific cartographic elements such as map scale and map projection.

Mapillary, the crowdsourced database of street-level imagery, has been acquired by Facebook

Mapillary, the Swedish startup that wants to take on Google and others in mapping the world via a crowdsourced database of street-level imagery, has been acquired by Facebook, according to the company’s blog. Terms of the deal aren’t being disclosed.

The Mapillary team and project will become part of Facebook’s broader open mapping efforts. Mapillary also says its “commitment to OpenStreetMap stays.” Writes Mapillary co-founder and CEO Jan Erik:

From day one of Mapillary, we have been committed to building a global street-level imagery platform that allows everyone to get the imagery and data they need to make better maps. With tens of thousands of contributors to our platform and with maps being improved with Mapillary data every single day, we’re now taking the next big step on that journey.

As Erik notes, Facebook is known to be “building tools and technology to improve maps through a combination of machine learning, satellite imagery and partnerships with mapping communities.” Mapping has immediate use-cases for the social networking behemoth, such as Facebook Marketplaces and its local business offerings, while another application is augmented reality.

You can now follow people [Yikes!] on Google Maps, the company's newest social network

Google Maps is pretty much the go-to app for navigation these days, but it packs a lot of additional features as well, like offering business info and personalized recommendations. Google experimented with allowing users to follow select Local Guides last year, and now the company is expanding the program to include all users — that's right, Google Maps is now a social network.

Rolling out globally today, users on Google Maps who have shared photos, reviews, or lists publicly will be followable. The updated profiles look a lot like a Twitter or Facebook page, with a follow button and the number of followers the account has. Once you follow a user, you'll receive their posts, recommendations, and other wisdom in the Updates tab of the Maps app.
